    Great news. This was being rumoured in France a couple of weeks back. A Bordeaux fan I know thought we'd do well to get him. Pretty highly rated in the French league.

    Can we get back to being Southampton again - young players coming through I mean, not fighting a relegation battle!

    If it's true that Pellegrini put himself forward for the job then this appointment hopefully shows the true mettle of the Saints board. An executive team with fewer principles would have gone for the big name rather than the best fit. Welcome Saint Claude, may all your troubles be in deciding who to leave out, rather than who to shoehorn in, and please, remember that we do actually play football in December in the Premier League!

    Glad it is finally settled. Like a lot of us I first thought who? Then I read his profile and thought, no way we will get him. For years I have moaned about the roundabout of failing British managers that always seem to get another and another and another chance in the top two divisions. This appointment excites me. Like a lot of fans I think I know a lot about football. What I know is what the papers and MOTD tell me. The Saints board don't just put a few names in a hat and hope. Just because Black is associated with AV relegation isn't a problem. A lot of great players and managers have been relegated and come back even better. It's character building. Let the good times roll! Sound of happy clapping in background.

    I note the official announcement mentions consulting the players...don't know whether that is in general terms (as in do you want a manager?) or whether some had actually heard of Claude.
