I was staggered when I saw Kane taking those dead balls. Let alone Sterling. Vardy was one of the very few who played with a sense of urgency - the rest looked resigned to the inevitable defeat, even with 40 minutes to play. I used to like Hodgson but he loused this up so much. My eldest was saying "Should England win this?" (as he does with the Horns) and my usual response is to say, "It's not that they should, because nothing's as certain as that in football." But come on! (There is no disrespect intended here, ak, Iceland were gods) England probably has nearly 200x as many people, a better squad on paper, and so it IS down to players and manager getting the basics right. Where was the passion? Where was the energy? Where was the pride? Where was the captaincy? Where was the leadership? Lineker (prize tosser in my book since he treated Sir Graham as he did) mentioned Tottenham six times in the opening 2 minutes of this Euro campaign. Did he mention the might of the Lillywhites again last night? I turned off.
All of that, though Rashford was so good when he came on, why oh why did that change come so late!? Can't believe Gareth Southgate is top odds for the job...but i'm sure that will change before the FA finds their new (yes) man! So infuriating. Yes, we had no right to win, but to lose like that was simply (predictably) embarrassing!
2 years ago our exit from the World Cup heralded a spate of inquests as to why England fail miserably at the tournaments, one was a documentary from King Lineker himself where he visited Germany & Spain and investigated their youth development systems - I expect that this can just be repeated as nothing has changed in the last 2 years, well actually in the last 50 years. Change needs to start way up at the top with the FA - how can an organisation allow someone like Brooking lead their development programme when all he did was play golf, attend a few corporate sessions at St. Georges and appear on TV when his mates at the BBC invite him along? Forget Woy resigning, all of the executive of the FA should resign this morning. Interesting stat - England have won only 12 tournament matches in the past 50 years!
Not being a fan of Lineker, I watched the game on RTE2 - the commentators and pundits were so much better, no histrionics just plain statements of fact as they saw it. One point they made was that the Iceland head coach was a Swede (Lagerback), former coach of Sweden - and pointed out that every one of his teams had a 100% record against England. Maybe he's the man...
Une desastre eh... But good to see the Icelandic way being so successful . Good for them Meanwhile............ as H has said..... massive new broom needed
We will just have the same cycle over again for the World Cup - qualify by beating Scotland twice and then flop in Russia..
How is Joe Hart the regular English goalkeeper? There must be a dozen keepers in Leagues 1 & 2 who are better than him. If he said what Arnason alleges, then he deserves everything he and the other members of the squad will get.
Only showing over confidence like some fans and pundits I guess not the first time either. I remember Alan Hansen saying before Germany hammered us 4-1 in 2010 that none of their players would get into our team.. Its why generally I never slag another team off before a game! Joe Hart was probably the last person who should have been telling everyone want to do anyway as he had a mare during the whole of the tournament!
Anyone else think that Troy would have made a difference had Woy had the guts to include him in the squad. one thing is for certain he would not have given up like 90% of the England team did
Also, Mark Noble or Danny Drinkwater should have been in the squad instead of Crock Wilshere. Someone should show the England football team the rugby matches in Australia to emphasise what playing for the shirt when you are an England international really means.
