The murderer was clearly suffering mental health issues, added to his obvious political leanings. Had this been a right-wing politician murdered by a Muslim fanatic with mental health issues what is the difference? There are always going to be one-off incidents outside anyone's control that will rile certain sections of the far left or right, I hope the British public are wise enough to see through any capital being made of such situations by either side. This is just a complete tragedy for Jo Cox and her family and the dignified statement from her husband says far more than anything else...
I agree entirely Sooperhoops but political leanings and Muslim fanaticism are not created within a vacuum. If you have a person who is a lunatic anyway listening to a Mullah preaching that the West is at fault for all of his problems and he then goes out and commits murder is all of the blame his own ?
To be fair you don't need to use her death to discredit the leave side over immigration, they do a fine job of that themselves, as per my questions regarding immigration that you were completely unable to even touch on! To those saying that she wasn't a prominent member of remain, here is a picture she tweeted the day before she died from the counter demo against Farage and his BS, I believe she was on the boat with Geldoff and the pic is of her husband and kids..
If this killer had been a Muslim fanatic, we would be asking ourselves how he became radicalised and seeking out 'hate preachers'. Farage is preaching hate if you ask me.
It's a price we pay for freedom of speech, ultimately the buck stops with the individual. The way we now have freedom of communication means you will never entirely shut down links to fanatical groups unless we go the way of the North Koreans, it'll never happen. Sadly, I don't think this will be the last time something like this happens...
How many more savages & barbarians do you people want in the country. Better hope its not one of your family next time http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...murder-schoolgirl-Alice-Gross-police-say.html
Would you refer to all British people as savages and barbarians because of the moors murderers ? Or any one of Britains other famous criminals ? This does not bring the question of freedom of movement into doubt because Britain is not in Schengen, all passports are checked and screened at the border and, although he had a record in the UK. there had been no attempt to contact the authorities in Latvia. If there is criticism here then it must be directed at Scotland Yard. It cannot be used as an argument for Brexit - because in the event of that the British police would work even less effectively with their European partners than they do now.
#Headinthefuckingsand You bang on about those who want to leave not answering your questions on immigration, especially me, but your response seems to be to let as many people in who want to come and then put pressure on the government to increase capacity to cope. This is insane. We are a small island with local hospitals and schools etc under extreme pressure. Pressure that ordinary working class people are really concerned about. These are concerns that the liberal elite and wealthy labour voters of North London have no idea about. The last labour government allowed a multi cultural experiment to change the landscape of this country in many areas. Many, thoroughly decent people in this country don't like the way the identity of their Nation is changing. I've had this discussion with stan and he doesn't mind that, for example, the Uxbridge Road now resembles a foreign country. I don't like this. Neither of us are right, we just have different viewpoints. Controlled immigration has been and will continue to be fantastic and enriching for this country. We just can't continue to fill up this small island, with the South East the most densely populated area in Europe. This is all without even mentioning the security implications of open borders. You disagree, I get that, but please don't look down on those of us with genuine concerns. We are too often dismissed with condescending, snobbish ridicule for daring to discuss the issue.
So it appears even if you vote to leave...it may not happen http://uk.businessinsider.com/green-eu-referendum-not-legally-binding-brexit-2016-6 A really crucial detail about the upcoming EU referendum has gone virtually unmentioned and it is probably the most crucial detail: Parliament doesn't actually have to bring Britain out of the EU if the public votes for it. That is because the result of June 23 referendum on Britain's EU membership is not legally binding. Instead, it is merely advisory, and, in theory, could be totally ignored by UK government. This incredible detail is explained in a new blog post by Financial Times columnist and legal expert David Allen Green. Green says that no legal provision was included in the EU referendum legislation that requires UK Parliament to act in accordance with the outcome of the referendum. This is unlike the last referendum held across Britain, the Alternative Vote referendum held in 2011, where the outcome had a legal trigger and had to be acted on by the government of the time. Instead, what will happen next if the public votes for a Brexit will be purely a matter of parliamentary politics. The government could decide to put the matter to parliament and then hope to win the vote, Green says. In the scenario of Britain's EU membership being put to a Westminster vote, barring no dramatic change in allegiances, it is likely that MPs would vote to keep the country in the 28-nation bloc. This is because the vast majority of the 650 MPs identify as Europhiles and would likely support a motion position to protect Britain's place in the EU. Pro-EU MPs could even argue, ironically, that ignoring the public's will would be parliamentary sovereignty in practice - something that Leave campaigners argue has been conceded to Brussels. Alternatively, ministers could attempt to negotiate an updated EU membership deal and put it to another referendum. Finally, the government could just choose to totally ignore the will of the public. Good post Col. As I have said several times on this thread, though I don't share your concerns (or not in the same way) I do recognise this is a real issue and needs to be addressed. And what has been completely absent from the Remain campaign is any attempt to say what, if anything, will be done about EU immigration in the event of Remain. It can't be left to fester, otherwise things could get genuinely nasty. Doubtless technically correct Beth, but I will be genuinely surprised if MPs did ignore a Brexit vote, unless it is incredibly close. The first thing they would do is look at the result in their own constituency, if it's a resounding 'out' they won't risk their seat at the next election. There may be an astounding number of abstentions in the parliamentary vote though.
If parliament ignores the result of the referendum, I would imagine that it could be the end for politicians in this country.
Is this not hypocrisy at its finest? So if you raise genuine concerns about the economy in the event of a brexit you are a scaremonger and talking rubbish about things that'll never happen, but if you tell people that voting to stay will result in your daughters being raped and murdered then you are just raising concerns? You don't need to be an unskilled worker to be a ****phile murderer by the way! When have I said that I want an open door policy and to keep filling up the country? I actually would like to see a substantial drop in immigration but not at the cost of completely ruining our economy. The question I put and the points I raised where that actually if we vote brexit we may actually still be stuck with the same levels of immigration or even higher numbers on top of the financial problems that we would be facing, the lack of clarity from the leave camp tells me they have no actual plan to deal with that, it's just a hope for the best situation.
I'd think there'd be a campaign of civil disobedience involving half the country. How big are our prisons?
Previously you intimated that the problem wasn't the numbers of immigrants but the government's lack of reaction to it. You are now angrily contradicting yourself. Tell me, in the event of a remain win, what do you think could be done to reduce the number of immigrants from the EU? Or are you not bothered?
This is what the EU does for the British economy Cadbury moved factory to Poland 2011 with EU grant. Ford Transit moved to Turkey 2013 with EU grant. Jaguar Land Rover has recently agreed to build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, the same company who have trashed our steel works and emptied the workers pension funds. Peugeot closed its Ryton (was Rootes Group) plant and moved production to Slovakia with EU grant. British Army's new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales. Dyson gone to Malaysia, with an EU loan. Crown Closures, Bournemouth (Was METAL BOX), gone to Poland with EU grant, once employed 1,200. M&S manufacturing gone to far east with EU loan. Hornby models gone. In fact all toys and models now gone from UK along with the patents all with with EU grants. Gillette gone to eastern Europe with EU grant. Texas Instruments Greenock gone to Germany with EU grant. Indesit at Bodelwyddan Wales gone with EU grant. Sekisui Alveo said production at its Merthyr Tydfil Industrial Park foam plant will relocate production to Roermond in the Netherlands, with EU funding. Hoover Merthyr factory moved out of UK to Czech Republic and the Far East by Italian company Candy with EU backing. ICI integration into Holland’s AkzoNobel with EU bank loan and within days of the merger, several factories in the UK, were closed, eliminating 3,500 jobs Boots sold to Italians Stefano Pessina who have based their HQ in Switzerland to avoid tax to the tune of £80 million a year, using an EU loan for the purchase. JDS Uniphase run by two Dutch men, bought up companies in the UK with £20 million in EU 'regeneration' grants, created a pollution nightmare and just closed it all down leaving 1,200 out of work and an environmental clean-up paid for by the UK tax-payer. They also raided the pension fund and drained it dry. UK airports are owned by a Spanish company. Scottish Power is owned by a Spanish company. Most London buses are run by Spanish and German companies. The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station to be built by French company EDF, part owned by the French government, using cheap Chinese steel that has catastrophically failed in other nuclear installations. Now EDF say the costs will be double or more and it will be very late even if it does come online. Swindon was once our producer of rail locomotives and rolling stock. Not any more, it's Bombardier in Derby and due to their losses in the aviation market, that could see the end of the British railways manufacturing altogether even though Bombardier had EU grants to keep Derby going which they diverted to their loss-making aviation side in Canada. 39% of British invention patents have been passed to foreign companies, many of them in the EU The Mini cars that Cameron stood in front of as an example of British engineering, are built by BMW mostly in Holland and Austria. His campaign bus was made in Germany even though we have Plaxton, Optare, Bluebird, Dennis etc., in the UK. The bicycle for the Greens was made in the far east, not by Raleigh UK but then they are probably going to move to the Netherlands too as they have said recently.
In light of what happened to Jo Cox I think politicians would be literally handing an excuse to any far-right nutjob to crawl out of the woodwork if they went against a majority Brexit vote. Even if the majority was under 1% it must stand, after all, if it was 1% to remain there would definitely be no change...
When did I say that? You're starting to sound like Gove and Co spouting out lies about what people are saying! You can't tell me how we would reduce immigration by leaving the eu but expect me to explain how we would reduce it by staying in?
If you're worried about the number of jobs moved into the eu from grants whilst we are here then imagine for a moment what it would be like if we left, the eu will fall over themselves to fund moving jobs from here into countries with high unemployment, it would help their economy by keeping the money and jobs within the block and reduce the cost of the product for their members due to lower tariffs and cheaper production. We've already heard from various business leaders that they may have to move many jobs anyway just to keep themselves within the eu as would damage their businesses by not doing so with regulations etc.
