What did Moore do wrong? The Gurkha had all the time in the world, took too long to quicken and was forced to switch as a result, was well held when just staying on at the end, finished as the formbook suggested they would. He was running against two other Group 1 milers today, neither particularly special but solid animals, as opposed to France where he was running against Group 3 middle distance horses in a sprint.
It was a carbon copy of Kingmans St James Palace, Night Of Thunder had the run of the race and tried to steal it with first run in the straight, but Kingman still slaughtered him from a very similar position to The Ghurkas today. Thats the difference between a good miler and a top miler. There is obviously not a lot between the 3 this year and they can probably beat each other on a given day with conditions and run of the race but you have to say Galileo Gold is top at the minute.
That's a fair assessment I feel. Were they to meet in two weeks time at Ascot again and all priced at 3-1 I would definitely have my money the Gurkha.
There's not much between the lot of them. Whether the ride was poor or not by Moore, the Gurkha was odds on today after winning the weakest of the three Guineas. Taking that price was madness.
