van Aanholt pens long-term deal Published: 08 June, 2016 by Oscar Chamberlain Dutchman signs new contract. Sunderland AFC defender Patrick van Aanholt has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light. The 25-year-old Netherlands international has signed a new four-year contract, which will keep him on Wearside until 2020. The pacey left-back, who joined Sunderland from Chelsea in 2014, has scored five goals in 69 appearances, including four in the Premier League last season. Speaking about the Dutchman’s new deal, manager Sam Allardyce said: “Patrick was an outstanding performer last season, contributing not only solid defensive performances, but also assists and vital goals. “It is fantastic to be able to secure the long-term services of such a talented footballer and athlete, who will hopefully continue to improve here for many years to come.”
Good news, he improved massively throughout the season as his defending at the start was woeful at times. Think Big Sam will experiment more with playing him higher up the pitch next season.
Good news for us hes a great attacking fullback. He still needs alot of work with his defending though(West ham away in Feb springs to mind), but im sure Sam will sort that out.
Isn't Kirchoff ours already? I vaguely remember we paid less that £1m for him. It's M'Vila who is on loan.
I thought it was only a 18 month deal. 4 or 5 year deal for him would be perfect. I'm sure SA will have the club working on this
Pleased to hear this. The lad has come on leaps and bounds since big Sam arrived and I believe we have not seen the best of him. With Sams experience, we will be seeing the lad terrorising defences week in week out.
After a very poor start he was great last year, to the point where bigger clubs might take notice if he can keep it up so great news that he's signed up for the next 4 years, if anyone wants him now we can tell em to do one or at least cough up a decent fee. He's a bit suspect at times defensively but what he adds going forward far outweighs that and makes him one of the first names on the team sheet for me.
