I've never proclaimed to have anything against America. I love the place and the people have always been friendly to me.

Even if I do still partially hold the nation responsible for killing Lennon!

Welcome back Brian, good to have you back on fella.
Disagree with you on Lamotta like, had a hell of a punch on him.
He could have been a great middleweight had it not been for the fact he was an Italian American & the mafia got their claws into him.
He threw a fight against Sugar Ray Robinson but Ray never put Jake on his arse.
He was a right hard bastard. Just a shame the way he ended up.

Fair dos's and well said in defence of your nation. To balance that however it must be said that it took another 100 years and a civil war to abolish slavery and then almost another hundred years for the southern states to finally give up on segregation and award equal citizen status. You may not be aware that during that civil war the mill workers of Lancashire refused to handle southern states cotton even though some of them starved to death. With the income from those cotton sales the south could well have won the civil war and history re-written.So through the working man we part way exonerated ourselves.

Similarly with the second world war, if Hitler had not thrown his lot in with the Japs then you would have had no need to enter a European war so really you did not save our sorry ass, more whupped his in conjunction with us..

Our histories are intetrwined by good and bad events and we have generally ambled along without acrimony until Reagan and Thatcher came up with the special relationship phrase to replace what had been generally seen as a reliance on one another to do the right thing when needed. Or as Churchill put it we remain "two nations divided by one language". We'll have a cup of tea over this on 4th July.:emoticon-0150-hands

It's easy to have a go at America from the cheap seats while they are the first on site at most disasters around this disasterous World .
Super neighbours .... Couldn't be happier that they are .
While most of the West bellyache about America , while putting them under a microscope , America try to keep the World safe with they're telescopes .

Ok, there are things I dislike about America, but there are things I don't like in every country - including my own! All I would say is if I had a choice of being a United State of America or a United State of Europe, I'd pick the USA every single time. At least the President, Senate and Congress there get elected by the people and not by a little in crowd behind closed doors.

For choice, however, I'd prefer independence.

We were coming in against Hitler and Germany either way. That had been decided, and that's why the military build up took place. Obviously, Churchill wanted it sooner rather than later. The build up took time, we had no military to speak of, and were sending you as much as possible. Japan made it all quite easy. We probably could have started a couple of months earlier, but not much more.

The slavery issue is different. The entire southern economy depended on that free labor and way of life. Yes, it took 100 years to abolish and over 600,000 men died in the war. We still deal with the after effects. All true. But, it was the Original Sin that created the mess.

Watched Ali tonight. When we were kings tomorrow.

"if I ever was to get in the ring with Joe, here's what you might see.
Ali comes out to meet Frazier, but Frazier starts to retreat.
If Joe back up an inch farther, he'll wind up in a ringside seat.
Ali swings with his left. Ali swings with his right. Just look at the kid carry the fight. Frazier keeps backin', but there's not enough room. It's only a matter of time before Ali lowers the boom.
Ali swings with his right. What a beautiful swing. But the punch lifts Frazier clean out of the ring.
Frazier still rising, and the referee wears a frown 'cause he can't start countin' till Frazier comes down.
Frazier's disappeared from view. The crowd is getting frantic. But our radar stations done picked him up. He's somewheres over the Atlantic.
Now, who would've thought, when they came to the fight, they was gonna witness the launching of a coloured satellite? "

Well, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands have made that system work for yonks! They handle their own taxes, their own 'immigration;, in fact most of their local affairs. It's just things like defence, foreign policy, etc. that they defer to London. More recently, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are heading that way. And I suspect there are a lot of people in the N.E. would like it too.

The success of the system means it has grown within the UK from two (Isle of Man and C. Islands) to five in the last thirty years or so. And many - the N.E, the N.W., Shropshire, Cornwall etc. - would probably vote to go that way, so that London - like Washington DC - only decide the big unifying matters. It's worth thinking about.
