Not a fish and chip thread again! Incidentally I've tried Papas, excellent, also tried Cave St last time I was in Hull, very disappointed after all the hype it gets on here.
Here you go GLP, you'll have to pretend to be a French Hipster though. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/dec/11/fish-chips-seine-french-foodies-british-cuisine
Does nobody get a cheeky battered sausage on the side these days? And while we're at it, what the actual **** is a saveloy?
Saveloy & chips is ****ing wonderful. We travel 30 miles to visit the only chippy we know round here that offers it. Sometimes with cheese on the chips, usually with a Stella on the side. I'm seriously thinking about it now.
It's a classic "warning, may contain meat" type of sausage which is frankly, awesome. Had a health check today, apparently me cholestrol's high, or something. The overall figures ok, but the bad bit is too high. The conversation went like this: Me: "Honestly we eat quite healthily. Baked spuds, salad, olives, nowt fried, well apart from Fridays obviously. No crisps. Low fat yoghurts. Cereals for breakfast, proper ones like shredded wheat" Nurse: "So, no biscuits?" <need to mention at this point, my missus had been in before me and forgotten the old "loose lips sink ships" I live by> Me: "Well we have the odd white choc chip from the co-op, they're lovely!" Nurse: "white choc is the worse! Its the fat scraped off the dark choc!" Me: "But...what? I thought it was the healthiest! Now you're going to tell me, that at 10pm, or Magnum O'Clock as we know it, when we have a white choc magnum whilst watching something we've saved on Sky is bad??" Nurse: "you eat a white choc magnum, with the worst choc on, covering ice cream which is also bad, just before you go to bed, where it laying in your arteries??" Me: "Look love, if you're trying to put me off here, you're not doing a good job, they're £1.67 for 4 in the co-op, we've got 3 boxes in the freezer..." Honestly, these people, they're frigging crazy.
This thread is making me homesick. Even Ernie's bland, grey, soggy batter is probably better than what I can get here. The efforts in the "English" pubs are always previously frozen, reformed and never a single piece of fish and often in breadcrumbs...and don't get me started on trying to get malt vinegar for them. I'm off to chat to some pretty Swedish girls to remind me why I moved out here.
I felt for you then. Until your last sentence. I might post a photo of my fish and chips later just to piss you off.
Fine I'll post a picture of my Swedish girl later to get me own back I'm half tempted to try and the dig the deep fat fryer out of the back of the cupboard and give fish and chips go myself.
The was one of those Truth About Food programmes on last night and they did scientific tests to see which was the best breakfast option. One group were fed wholegrain cereals and milk, another were given plain low fat yogurt with fruit (banana) and the third lot were given bacon and egg. After each group was tested, it was decided that bacon and egg was the best option, as the increased protein kept you fuller for longer and stopped you snacking on **** between meals and there was very little calorie difference. Only drawback was that you had to grill the bacon and boil the eggs, but hey, no diet''s perfect.
