It is a bit of a concern to look at the race card for a bank holiday weekend meeting and see two or three races where there appears to be a license to print money. In the Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock, it is easy to reduce the field to just two and given that Carnachy was third in the Listed Aston Park Stakes after winning a weaker contest at Goodwood, it is easy to go with the likely favourite JOURNEY, beaten favourite in a Group race at York on her seasonal bow but clearly the best horse here on previous form (and favoured by race conditions). I just hope Frankie has the sense to make the running if there is no pace and she is too keen. The John of Gaunt Stakes features a few old friends but they cannot all win this one. Adaay did me a couple of favours last year but can he reverse recent running with Breton Rock? On his seasonal bow, So Beloved won easily over course and distance and has to be feared but I am going to go with last year’s Free Handicap winner HOME OF THE BRAVE, already proven at this level, for in-form trainer Hugo Palmer. Guineas non-stayer Buratino drops back to sprinting having shown up for a long way in the first Classic. Mark Johnston’s colt has plenty of miles on the clock and may not have much improvement left to give, whilst his chief opponent in the Sandy Lane Stakes, Gifted Master, appears to be continuing to progress. Ryan Moore is an interesting booking for Richard Fahey’s Donjuan Triumphant and I do not discount Henry Candy’s La Rioja lightly. If he drifts in the betting, I might get involved with the favourite assuming I can get in the bookies from the stag do!
Lots of racing tomorrow but much of it tough, too many races in which you can only narrow it down to 4 or 5 which makes things difficult. Haydock 2.00 Strong Steps 11-2 Up against lesser opponents than last time out an I am hoping this will see him just hold out to the line this time. 3.10 Home of the Brave 3-1 Difficult shout as I have Convey as a must back next time horse, sadly he was beaten easily by HOTB previously and it's hard to make a rational case for him turning those tables, which is not to say he wont. 4.20 Dancing Years 9-1 This horse is well handicapped - great bet, but difficult race. Chester 1.45 Ocearnus 5-2 BANKER Favourite for Cunco'c race, a race which is looking very good after the Hills horse bolted in at Windsor on Monday. I will be amazed if this horse does not win well. 5.10 Cyril 6-1 Worth a small investment but not much more, of interest but not confident. Beverley 1.50 Geno 11-4 Dropped down a furlong is just what this one needed, strong bet. 2.25 The Last Lion 7-4 Better than these. Salisbury 7.20 Starchitect 15-8 Very well handicapped on his flat mark in light of his hurdles form. Good luck all
15:45 Haydock - Buratino (Really should sort out one from Bluesky9 for my Saturday bet, but the fun in racing for me is to try and sort one out myself. If I would just avoid mid-week sprees it's better I stick to the weekend. I rarely back a Mark Johnston horse because, frankly, I never know what the hell they are going to do. However, think Buratino is capable of winning a Group 2 sprint, just hope he has not already reached his peak in a busy career). Best of luck everyone! (I am "under orders" to cheer-on the Owls later! ).
Come one come all !! Tips required for a lovely day out at Cartmel please ?? The racing may not be top class but it's a lovely venue -if the weather holds ....
The BBC weather forecast looks lovely: Richard Johnson and Henry Brooke are the jockeys to follow. I'm always impressed how well Brooke rides this unique track. Their best chances look to be Desoto County (Johnson, 3.50) and Abbey Storm (Brooke, 4.25) - interestingly both owned by the Rooneys. DON'T back Desert Cry in the 2.40 - soft ground horse. Always has been, always will be. Always worth looking for course winners and a couple who should go well are: 2.40 May's Boy e/w (assuming 8 run) 3.15 Clues And Arrows Have a great day
At Cartmel -cruchain is a two time course winner and his trainer brings him up from South Wales for this ......?
Have a look at Brian Hughes back after a couple of weeks RnR and is for and ready. Elliot sends a few over so won't be far away. Don't forget a trip to the post office for Sticky Toffee Pudding. let me know next time and I'll sort badges Enjoy the sun.... but as ever Stay Frosty
Do not watch The Morning Line very often these days, but refreshing to see a trainer actually calling it how he sees it rather than beating about the bush. Hugo Palmer was hardly gushing about Gifted Master’s chances, suggesting that he is better on a stiff track like Ascot than a flat track like Haydock today and perhaps wants further. Despite those warnings the whole panel tipped him! Thankfully the panel were not unanimous about HOME OF THE BRAVE although the trainer admitted to being most bothered about the second favourite So Beloved (me too!). I liked Rishi Persad asking if there were any jobs going at Hugo Palmer TV at the end of the year. I know that heisenburg has already put this up, but I have also been told BOATER in the Hilary Needler (Beverley 3:00). Currently it is drifting against favourite Grizzel, I suspect because of the drying ground.
What someone should have asked Hugo Palmer was if he was aware of the amount of courses in this country and the variety of distances raced over. He may just have been being pessimistic as some trainers are but if he feels the course and distance are wrong for the horse then why is he entering the horse? I think Gifted Master should win.
One I like at an ew price today is Ocean Tempest in the 2.50 at Chester. Won the Lincoln a few years back of a 7lb higher mark and ran well enough lto for most of the way in the same race this year. Hopefully fitter today, well drawn and 3 from 3 at this track. 11/1 worth a go. Good luck everyone.
All the Wycombe fans will be cheering for them Swanny. Seems to be a bit of a love affair between the 2 sets of fans.
All the best to the various Shef Wed fans on here. A monster pay day awaits the victors. In the oval ball game I'd love to see the Exeter Chiefs victorious at Twickers this afternoon. They're up against it but I went to a match at Sandy Park a few years back and they're fans are great, really get behind the team.
Hope your right Chan. I've been to the last 5 home games for the Chiefs with my mate who has a season ticket. The fans and atmosphere are awesome. Gutted I should be at Twickers today but my mate has gone on his hols today, inconsiderate git and didn't fancy going on me own. Also doing SHEFFIELD today along with ATHLETICO.
If I had one bet at Cartmel id be lumping on Eshtiaal 2/1-looks a typical Elliot plot job and Dickie J is on board. Only wager for me today is a Tastey sunshine double at Navan for both Seeyouallincoppers(a notorious nightclub in Dublin which I live around the corner from) and Lustrous Light to prevail 11/2. Best of luck to SW against Hull later today-Big club like that should be back playing in the top league and let's be honest who gives a toss about Hull!
Would love it if the mighty owls could pull it off and go up but I just can't see us getting passed Hull. Hope I'm wrong like
Dai Walters the owner of ffos las has a horse in the bumper trained by Paul Morgan whose last two have scooted up-cresus d'arteul @7/1
Sevenfold an eyecathcher there at Navan. Given a very easy ride till the last furlong then finished strongly.
