    Cat’s your lot for Bruce?
ON THE LOOK OUT ... but Sunderland manager Steve Bruce may have to sell first.
    By GRAEME ANDERSON
    Published on Saturday 30 July 2011 10:30

STEVE Bruce says he would not be surprised if there are no more signings at Sunderland this summer.

The Black Cats’ boss has made nine signings so far, and was believed to be still in the hunt for a left winger and a striker.

He says it is unlikely now that he will bring anybody else in – but insists that if that’s the case, he’s happy with the squad he’s got.

He hold the Gazette: “We’ll have to see how the next few weeks pan out, but at this stage I honesty can’t see myself bringing someone else in.

“The equation seems to be that we have to sell before we can buy.

“People know the players who are surplus to requirement and we are trying to find clubs for the likes of George McCartney, Matt Kilgallon and Nyron Nosworthy – but how successful we are remains to be seen.

“There’s also the possibility that things can change over time, but it could be that the nine players we’ve brought in so far will be the extent of our business in the transfer market this summer. And to be honest, I’ll have no problems with that.

“Yes, in an ideal world you might have looked for that left winger, or striker, or both but I’m very happy with the work that we’ve done, and there’s not doubt that we have a much stronger squad as a result.

“When you look at the squad we had when I took over, and the squad we have now, there’s no comparison.

“In fact when you look at the squad we have now and the squad we had last season, it’s a demonstrably stronger outfit.

“As far as the strikers are concerned, Stephane Sessegnon has come to the party, and he brings up our strength in that department to four forwards.

“He can also play out on that left wing though, as can Steed Malbranque, Seb Larsson and Kieran Richardson, so we’re not desperately short of options there either.

“The starting 11 I can call on when everyone’s fully fit, I’m very happy with. But I also feel that we’ve now got cover in all positions and the players who can come in off the bench are much stronger than they were.”

Well that has taken a bit of 'umph' out of my day!! Praying it is a large dose of 'under promise, over deliver' from Bruce.....

I really can't understand why we have to sell before we can buy - maybe ES has decided to take back a little of the £27 mil he had to put into the club (out of his own pocket) 2 seasons in a row to balance our losses???

we NEED a proven striker - not bothered about Marque signing, just a proven, premier league striker as we only have one that has shown he can, just, cut the mustard. I do agree that we don't NEED a left winger, but i would get a right tingle if we were to go all out to get Johnson

And there is the problem dazzler, I think we are OK on strikers but need a LW, maybe Bruce agrees with us both but not how we want him to.

I had a funny feeling that would be our lot hence I posted that thread last week asking if we were happy with what we have.

I am a little concerned now if im being honest. Yes we are deffo stronger in a lot of areas over the pitch but I would have liked to have went out and bought a left winger again we are going to be playing players out of position. The only saving grace is Steeeeed might pop up with the odd goal here and there a mad thought I know considering his record but! He is in the last year of his contract and will be playing for an extention so I have a funny feeling if he gets a start he will be on fire this year we shall see.

I am still optimistic we can have a decent season and I believe we will but just a tad concerned about where the goals are going to come from.

I can understand ES not wanting to plough money into what at the moment seems a very starnge transfer market and remember we will have the January sales (sales lmao players cost twice as much due to the panic buying) which we may need to plunder if it aint going right.

Cannot wait for the season to start now mind ha way the lads...

You just never know we could be done until January or SB might just surprise us all before Aug 31st.

I still think we will bring in 1 or 2 loans players

and thats why I have highlighted the word COULD, Bruce seems to enjoy playing games with the market and he wins more than he loses.

I think we won't sign anybody until January and it would only be a maybe. I do not think we will be signing a specialist left winger, when Gyan leaves for ACON I think that Bruce will see how Ji and Wickham have settled down and then decide whether he needs a striker and if he does he will loan a striker, someone like Welbeck or Sturrige who are capable of playing on the left as well.

Well they should bring in about three and a half quid. So guess we're done.

Unless he's refering to some of the better players.

I'm really not all that worried about strikers. Ji and Sess have been class in the pre season. Gyan, Sess, Ji and Wickham.

    I'm happy with that.

Left wing's very worrying as I think Malbranque's had his time, Sess needs to be in the hole and Larsson is needed on the right, as is our lack of ability to scrape the rubbish off our wage bill.

Personally think its just Brucie covering himself incase the worst comes to the worst and we don't sign anyone

when did Quinny and Bruce tell the truth with regards to new players coming in

according to Quinny we wouldn't have anyone in till August a month or two back

think we will bring someone in even if its just a loan signing

Its getting to the point now where the transfer I'm most looking forward to sunderland being involved in is the sale of george mccartney, to think he's burning a 45k a week hole in our finances is maddening. Its surely come to the point where we should be offering him to clubs free of charge. I'm hoping a few of the championship clubs fancy a chance on noz n killgallon, both decent defenders at that level. Bruce should be adding Angeleri to that list, another financial liability. Does anyone know if we are covering any of riveros' wages during his loan stint cos I imagine he got a decent salary to come here. That could be well over 100k a week being wasted with no return. That's two quality players, that we still lack. I don't agree with bruce that we are stronger than at the start of last season in regards to players he has to pick from but its much better that they are safc players rather than loans.

I have to say I will and be a very disappointed lad as well. We all knew we needed 2 main areas strengthening this summer. Left wing and a Judas replacement.

As we stand, we have brought in neither. Yes we have strengthened but to be honest, none of the players we have brought in can play wide left with any ability and none of them can score 20 goals a season.

If this is it, 75% of the good work so far done by Bruce will be undone for me and foresee a season of little creativity and few goals which will result in only one thing.

    Another season of struggle.

If Wickham and Won are to be expected to come here and fire us to the top 10 then Bruce is living in cloud cuckoo land. If he thinks Sess is the answer then again, he is gambling big time. At no point in his career has Sess been a main striker and has absolutely no pedigree to suddenly become even the short term Judas replacement.

Come on SNQ and Brucie, dont put the brakes on when we are so close to making that step up. A record breaking striker was what we were spoon fed by the club back in January, when they told us no quick fix was available for .Judas. After 7 months looking, if they dont bring one in we will be struggling for goals again IMO.

Bugger. Just when I was getting very positive again? Lol

    SB is talking bollocks.

Willing to gamble money there will be at least 1 more possibly 2 signings.

Alt: He's saving cash to fund DW's transfer in January
