Sunderland have won the first division title 6 times. The first division being the old Football League division one, the top division in English football. That is now the Championship and the winners of that get the old Football League trophy. The Premier League is a completely different competition that is separate from the Championship and has it's own trophy. It is owned and run by the Football Association, not the Football League. They are two different organisations.

Sunderland have NEVER won the Premier League nor finished in the top 3. Newcastle United has NEVER won the Premier League but has finished in the top 3 several times. Football League titles from the 1930's and before therefore are completely irrelevant since they were so long ago. Huddersfield Town won the old Football League twice in the 1920's 30's. Are they to be used as a comparison for success? No, because in terms of modern football those successes are irrelevant. Nobody cares who won the title nearly 100 years ago. The Premier League is now the be all and end all and the yardstick for measuring 'success.' Since the PL era began, Newcastle United has missed two seasons [3 next year]; Sunderland has missed several. The cold hard facts are that in the Premier League era [relevant] Newcastle United has been the more successful club based on the number of seasons spent in the PL, league placings and the number of seasons spent in European competition. Both clubs are trophy less so success is measured in the above terms as it is relative.

    Hmm difference of opinion here.

On one hand, we have Fredor claiming Sunderland have won the premier league six times...

Which is obviously, wrong. As long as i have a hole in my arse, Sunderland will never win the Premier League 6 times.... HaHa.

I think we have to have clearly defined time widows, so as to refer to all tally arguments as "in the modern era"! Whenever that started?

I think it would be safe to say that the modern era began with the Premier League in 1992.

Can you imagine how many games were nobbled or thrown for a bit of cash pre 1940`s. I bet it was rife.

Preston North End won the first division title in 1888 and went the whole season unbeaten. Are Preston fans daft enough to turn around to fans of clubs like Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool and compare that win - "Well we went unbeaten all season - you never have". No chance. Having 6 First Division titles from the early 20th Century is irrelevant for modern purposes.

The problem is Fredor, these whippersnappers have no sense of history, some of them think the world began in 1992.
Heaven knows how football managed without the Premier League.

YOU, are of course CORRECT, as always.
To deny one's history makes one irrelevant and small minded.

Ignore them, senility is obviously creeping in far too early for them...

Time to point out how ignorant General Lee is

The word Premier always has been always will be an ADJECTIVE ( For GLS a describing word )
Football in England ( Wales ) is divided into eight leagues and the first one at present has been named ( Noun ) The Premier league this can change at any time , if Toyota offered enough money it would presumably be called the Toyota league but it would still retain its position as the Premier ( No1, leading etc etc ) in the leagues

The one exception for the word premier being when it is used in a political sense as in Premier of a state then it becomes a NOUN

I made a true statement and if people decide in their mind to make presumptions on what I was saying is something I have no control over

I will accept apologies from all of the comments made in ignorance

PS I am the product of an English Grammar school in which my best subjects were English and Tech Drawing

And yet you continually mix up the difference between describing it as a premier league (note no capital letter as why the hell would you have a capital letter there if you just mean an adjective rather than a title) and your use of the word Premier which is referring to a title.

Perhaps not helped by you typing everything in capital letters in one of your posts earlier - no use harping on about a grammar school education when you type like a semi-literate twat Fredor.

To be fair the distinction is bogus, I'd happily agree Sunderland have won a premier league 6 times - it's just I factually cannot agree with the assertion they have won The Premier League 6 times. The Premier League is a noun, it is the title of the league and is incorporated - the company is called The Premier League and if you want to try and argue it is not a noun then you have to argue that companies are not things. Honestly don't try and give me an English lesson, I'm not having it you are out of your depth.

I expected more of you, surely there must be some sort of education system in Newcastle, I realise the standards are dropping but there has to be a limit

This is what Premier PREMIER premier means in the rest of the English speaking world, can anyone point out to me where the old first division does not meet the described criteria

I do not agree with your comment but I certainly commend you for putting forward a logical argument to the contrary , some people find they do not want to agree with a point of view but unable to offer an alternative and with nothing more in their armoury can only resort to abuse, and in doing so admit defeat

So by your reckoning Newcastle have won **** all since football was invented in 92 and you call yourselves a big club. I hate to tell you this but big clubs win trophies not get relegated.
