Joking aside, the guy has looked like a league 1 player for most of the season, other than a couple of early goals. He has a bit of pace but doesn't know what to do with it when he gets it, can't pass and his finishing is pony, even against Championship keepers.

Funny, but true, story in relation to this. In a previous existence, a long, long time ago (six years) I was Training Manager for my TOC. We used to spend a few days at the depots of Neville Hill and Newton Heath when we trained conductors, using smoke machines and suchlike simulating train evacuations, We also, as part of simulating a full train prep, had a home-made 'bomb', very much like the one spoken about here. Ours too had 'Training Device' written on it in ****ing big, yellow letters.

We used to hide it in the toilets, luggage racks, etc, when each individual conductor was assessed doing their prep. When they found it (and one or two didn't!), they did a simulated call to our Control Centre, who assumed the role of the security services. You all know where this is going.

I got a phone call at home one evening evening from the Dept Manager of Neville Hill. A cleaner had found it, left by one of my trainers. God, how he rubbed it in, and, of course, it was logged and we, as a department, rightly got our arses kicked. I don't think for one moment though that it even crossed their mind to close the depot down, stop the running of trains, etc. I think 'Training Device', in the previously mentioned big yellow letters, sort of gave the game away.

That said, before anyone pipes up, I don't suppose it's beyond the wit of terrorist to put that on their devices. It could be that as the alert has just been ratcheted up (due to NI, as I understand from R5L), just as it was ten years ago after 7/7, organisations and the security services are super-anxious. I also suspect that it#s what MI5 WANT the public to see - it's not as if we really can stop a determined terrorist, but if we're all made to think we're taking every precaution it somehow allays, by perception, the truth of our fundemental helplessness in this situation.

Doesn't seem right to me that one team can knock out another who are 15 points ahead of them in the league.

Absolutely. A sniffer dog isn't going to find a training device. They should have taken one of those spaniels or labs to the suspect device, and when it ignored it then that should have told them something.

Put that way it's tough, but they all know the rules in August. Miss out on the top 2 and you face the play offs.

Plus it's Brighton, so who gives a ****?

Eeee, Dean lane is about half a mile away from me :emoticon-0100-smile
Pretty sure the device at OT had no label attached since at least one disposal expert handled it and the same company trains many police for stadium security (some were on the training day at OT) so the name of the company would be known to them.

I've only just looked at the table cos it's only the championship and I don't really care, but I see that Brighton only missed out on 2nd place by a two goal difference. Then they get knocked out by a team half a mile behind. <doh>

The guidelines from the Home Office and Counter-Terrorism agencies is quite clear on this - all training devices are to be labelled as such. If you're right the training company is ****ed, but United have vicarious responsibility for employing them too. That said, I'm certain MI5 is creaming themselves with all this fuss going on. It doesn't stop terrorism, but it gives the impression that everyone is really cautious and effective. Dogshit, in my humble opinion.
