I mentioned it before the match, but it warrants repeating now we have done it...

SAINTS HAVE FINISHED ABOVE LIVERPOOL FC FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY AND HAVE NOW FINISHED ABOVE EVERY CLUB IN ENGLAND.

Yesterday's result was, perhaps, as impressive as the one against Man City. I thought that Palace looked very well organised and, up until the third goal, could have felt hard done by not to have secured a draw at that stage. We seemed to go up a gear after the third goal and the team seemed a lot more composed even though the game was getting quite stretched at one point.

Difficult to pick out a Man of the match as I felt that Mane, Tadic and Davis all performed well. Forster produced some amazing saves which were at a crucial point in the game yet I felt that Martina was particularly impressive. Two of his crosses led to goals and, for me, I feel that he has been our most improved player this season. I would not be surprised if he transpired to be an integral part of our squad like Victor Wanyama next season.

All in all, this season has been terrific dispute the disappointing early exit from European competition. I am not surprised that we finished above Liverpool as this has seemed increasingly more plausible over the last few seasons. There is always at least one big team who falls flat on their face in a season and I would not be surprised if the gap between Liverpool and Southampton widened as their fortunes wained. If we keep Koeman I think that a top five place is plausible next season. I would like to see us replicate Leicester's success in 2016/17 and whilst this might prove to be a one off, I think this season does herald a sea change insofar that it is increasingly likely that less-fancied teams will edge out the so-called "big clubs" over the next few years.

It was a shame that Spurs were pipped by Arsenal - probably undeserved over the course of the season with Spurs playing some good football. They are much better to watch and the fact that their English players ae allowed to thrive means that they are much better news for our national squad than Arsenal where Wenger has not really contributed meaningfully in bringing forward young talent in to the England squad.
