People were really quiet mate, we never got let in. I'm not sure anybody did in our stand we usually head up quite late and by the time we arrived we weren't allowed in.

I'm sure it'll be played down if it ends up being a bag of sausages but that's the last thing on your mind when you don't know if your family/mates are inside and nobody knows what's going on.

A controlled explosion has taken place at Old Trafford after the ground was evacuated shortly before Manchester United's final league game of the season.

The 3pm kick-off against Bournemouth was abandoned after two stands were cleared due to reports of a "suspect package".

The club tweeted: "Due to the discovery of a suspect package in the NW Quadrant of the ground, the match has been abandoned today on police advice."

Manchester United described it as "operation code red".

Greater Manchester Police tweeted: "A controlled explosion has just been carried out within the stadium by bomb disposal experts at Old Trafford. More to follow."

Army bomb disposal units and sniffer dog teams continue to investigate.

There are unconfirmed reports the suspect package was a mobile phone with a pipe attached found in toilets.

They are saying on the radio it was a phone wired up to some gas pipes.

We give our police a lot of **** especially in light of the Hillsborough inquest, today they deserve a lot of credit for how they handled that. 75,000 people panicking could have been uncontrollable.

I can well imagine fella. On the plus side there was no panic at the stadium. Looked very organised in getting the fans out

    Yes indeed.
TBH I'm surprised these Muslim extremists haven't blew up a football stadium already.
There's still a lot to play. Play-offs, FA Cup & then the Euros.
I expect security will be tight as ****.

Apparently there's a photo of some poor bugger who made the trip from Sierra Leone to watch his first United game, doing the rounds.

    What an unlucky bastard.

    Palace will like that, temporarily.

We will play our kids, it means nothing to us now guaranteed Europa if we finish 5th and 6th and we can't finish higher unless we win 19-0.

Let Bournemouth have it and dink £2m off Palace making them finish a place lower.

IMO this is 1 of 2 things.

    1. It's something that looked like a bomb so better to be safe than sorry. This happened when I was working in Moscow. One of the contractors had fixed a fibre cable and put it in a used plastic bottle. It looked very much like a home made bomb. We were based just outside the Kremlin so you can imagine the fuss, but someone took a photo off it and showed it the the technical team who explained what it was.

    2. A secret training exercise by the secret service. Don't tell anyone about it to test how people react in what they think is a real situation. With the terror alert raised recently and training exercises taking place in the region it's not an impossible explanation even though probably unlikely.

    3. I hope it was not option 3 a real device.

Either way as someone who works on putting on major events I am glad the security services are taking things like this seriously and working professionally to keep people safe. I am in Berlin next Sat doing the next FIA formula E race on the same day the German cup final is taking place, I hope their security services are as vigilant as ours.

I'm not mate, I have a 'speak first think later' attitude in general, doesn't come across well on forums!

Hopefully RTB will see it wasn't personal although he's well within his rights to shoot back.

There was a terror training exercise in the Trafford Centre only a week ago - so a possibly a covert exercise today maybe that's a continuation of the training
