Yesterday it was announced that Wael gave the players £100k to celebrate promotion in Vegas. However, according to the Post, the Football League has stepped in. This is from the Post... http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Bristo...tory-29249978-detail/story.html#ixzz48B2aC1jB Rovers promotion-winning heroes would have to fund their own celebratory trip to Las Vegas after it came to light that Football League rules prevent owner Wael Al-Qadi from paying for it. Reports over the weekend suggested that Al-Qadi had agreed to fund a £100,000 trip to the gambling capital of the world to reward the players for getting to League One but the Post understands that the club has been contacted by the Football League and offered a reminder on rules regarding the payment of promotion bonuses. It is understood that the club have been informed that any money received over and above the promotion bonuses written into the players' contracts at the start of the season could be construed as illegal payments and may impact Financial Fair Play rules. Should the players decide to enjoy their a post-promotion party in Vegas or any other destination the likelihood is that they will have to pool together the proceeds of any bonuses they may have received for their heroics at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday and fund it themselves. .
That's a bit tight, third automatic promotion in how many hundred years and they're begrudging the team a few nights on the slots...Boo Hoo Football League.
So they could find time for Vegas trip. Perhaps they can now use that time for a celebration bus tour.
I have to say this is a bit of a strange one. Would the same rules have applied if Wael had given them all an expensive gift? I cannot see how these conditions can be monitored, so that makes them open to abuse. What if the perks of the old days applied; hire a charabanc and take them to Blackpool for the day. What's the difference in principle? It seems to me that someone up in the 'gods' is trying to make his self importance be known. The trip is a 'no strings attached' gift, surely that comes within the FFP rules. How the dickens would Accrington have survived this season without the £400,000 that the directors stumped up to keep the HMRC and player's salaries in the black? This modern politically correct world does my head in!
Vegas can be done in a few hrs, bloody awful place........ But if they arranged a game against a "local" team then it's a "end of season tour" so no problem ?
I was actually going to say the same thing... If wael pays for DC's stag weekend/week as a personnel gift. And DC invites all his mates which part of the guest list just so happens to be the full squad. Who can stop that??? It's outside football?
They probably have the funds to do it without it effecting the FFP. They just won the league so prize money would be huge meaning lots to play with.
