I wouldn't agree with that. I've seen us relegated with record low points, twice! I would argue however that at least our players tried back then tho, they were just pisspoor.
I'd be incredulous if I were a newcastle fan after transfer window spending sprees came to nought because most of the team, staff and board just couldn't be arsed or didn't care enough.
The overpaid ****ers don't deserve the level of support they get.

You are probably a little sick of hearing about the Leicester City story, especially right now, when the pain of relegation is so raw ... but nevertheless I do believe you can take some heart from it ... Easter 2009 I went to watch us play at Hereford United, sitting in a home section because we had sold out our allocation... we were in the third tier of English football for the first time in our history and the relegation from the Championship had been a brutal exposure of where the club was now at .... we went on to win the League One title at the first attempt and went back up to the Championship. .. but I remeber sitting in the rickety old home stand thinking how far my club had fallen to be in that situation .. particularly when we went 1-0 down before coming back to win 3-1 ..

At that point could I have ever, even in my widest dreams, have imagined the events of the last two seasons ... for nearly the whole of my life (over 45 years of live game watching) .. our top flight ambition was, nearly always, just suviving ... quite frankly there was more chance of me getting a phone call from Nicole Sherzinger, letting me know that she had Rachel Weisz and Beyonce round at hers and askng whether I fancied popping round to have the 3 of them attempt to shag me to death than what has happened this season ... (I've checked with Betfair and they have admitted they would only have given me 4000/1 on that at the start of this season <laugh>) .

... the absolute truth is that Footie is unpredictable, and the real fan has to take the rough with the smooth, the triumphs with the disasters ... and there are usually far more of the latter for most of us...

In hindsight, going down to the third tier was the best thing that could have happened - it enabled us to shift out the dead wood and start a team building exercise where the underlying pre-requisite would be a desire to play for the shirt - we have just now reaped the ultimate reward for that - a first major honour in 132 years of existence.

As a neutral I think this is your opportunity to do the same - hopefully Ashley has had enough and sells the club now - if not, I hope he has at least learnt a salutory lesson and just backs whoever the manager is to build a team that your city can be proud of and you can feel a real connection to. I don't think you will have to go as far down as we did to come back both fitter and stronger as a club .... and a season is a short time in football in reality and I would be very surprised if you don't bounce straight back next season.

... all the best - and enjoy the summer ffs!

You couldn't do it when you had Brian Clough playing for you so you sure as hell are not going to do it now, enjoy your moment in the Sun, it is different when you play with the big boys
