Christ, the first time I saw Dubai it was a black runway in a brown landscape, and look at it now. Been back a few times but in the last visit in 2010 was chatting to a bar waitress who was about 4 ft tall and from Tibet or Nepal and had been recruited on a five year contract. She got one day a month off, but she said she was happy as she was sending money home to family.

That is one hell of an airline that took advantage of fuel cost about twenty years ago and took a big risk to make Dubai the big hub for long haul flights to east. Once took a flight from here to Newcastle with a crafty 48 hr stop over in Dubai on both legs. It is the only place I buy my duty free liquor.
