Funny place Middlesbrough. Not long ago, the population was about 40, it was pretty much just a few farms. They topped it up with Irish Navvies, and called it Port Darlington, and then it grew to the paradise it's become.
Now, we all want to forget Withernsea exists, especially me, as someone who has lived there. But you have to face facts and accept that that ****hole is real and in God's County.
They had Cleveland imposed on them at the same time we had Humberside imposed on us. Both were abolished in 1996 and both are back in Yorkshire.
Aye, but it means they invented the name, so where are the other cardinal broughs, northbrough etc? And why is Brough, boro?
Not sure about the first part of your question, but the reason it's brough and not borough is supposedly down to it being mis-spelt when it got its charter in 1853!
Go onto one of the Boro boards and ask them the question . I did several years ago and caused a right row . Anyway , the polite ones said that south of the Tees ( where Cloughie came from ) is in Yorkshire while north of the Tees is Durham .
Reverse snobbery. One of the most famous Yorkshiremen, Captain Cook, came from Marton. That is now a suburb of Middlesbrough.
Look no further for the reason than our owners who are absolutely ****ing ****e. How on earth anyone can disengage so many fans when we have so much potential to grow the fan base is remarkable.
I lived there for several years, and never got the impression from many people that they considered themselves to be Yorkshiremen or women. They seemed to identify more with Teesside.
Some indeed don't. They are the ones that try and sound more like Mackems and Geordies than Mackems and Geordies themselves. Which is why Sunderland fans, who have more antipathy towards Boro fans than Newcastle fans, always used to sing "You're just a small town in Yorkshire".
Someone from Leicester goes in my local pub. He supports Man Utd. I was really hoping Leicester would clinch it at Old Trafford.
