RIP. Man was a great fop, but a hell of a guitarist. My next gig is Terry Reid on 12th May. Wonder if he can hang on long enough...?
Just an observation on musicians being a "one off", changed the face of music, a genius etc. What would most of them achieved without inspiration possibly through drugs or electronics? I just wish someone would say he was a good bloke or something more meaningful. Being a talented musician should come with a health warning nowadays.
I'm not ashamed to say that I actually cried about 3-4 times during the week after Rik Mayall died. I suffered terribly in my late teens and through my 20's from depression/anxiety but I knew that if I put Bottom or the Young Ones etc on DVD I could forget about my troubles for at least half an hour. That meant so much to me! Along with my family his influence, which regularly beamed from my little TV in the corner, help mould me into the person I am today. He was like a 6th family member he was there so much. My humour is basically to a large extent based on him. I wish I had the chance to meet him. I wish I wrote to him before he died and explained how much his work meant to me, hoping I would have getting one of his rude replies telling me to **** off or something, to which I would have been totally over the moon! RIP to Prince RIP to Victoria Wood too, who I was not a fan of but had enormous respect for because she seemed like a genuinely nice lady with undoubted talent judging by how far she come.
Great post mate, he really was unique in his ways. I have never laughed so hard at anything more than his stupid facial expressions. He was part of a 'double act', that I'll never forget but for me he had so many more strings to his bow than Ade does. He loved this country and never sold out, in the end he was just a kid who refused to grow up. I'll never let my Bottom DVD's gather dust, my kids will watch them just like I did. Every day I see things that remind me of him, just the other day I was out shopping with the wife and we went into Victoria's Secret for some "Lin-gair-ee-ay"
This is one of my personal favourites. please log in to view this image 'What time do you call this?' My daughter is only 3 years old and she was sitting playing with her toys when I noticed it was on GOLD so I put it on. It must have caught her eye because within 5 minutes I heard giggling, I looked down and she was glued to it. She turned around to me and said 'This is funny!' and she cried when it finished. I barely go a day without a situation happening causing me to quote him either out loud or in my head.
Top bloke was Rik Mayal, loved him in the Young Ones and Black Adder...brilliant. Loved some of Prince's stuff, would have liked to have seen him live.
Class, I have a framed pic of them both on my window ledge at home, people often ask why I have it, like they're part of my family or something. I still call my mate Mr 55p to this day, I've called him that for about 12 years now.
I must admit that I didn't care for Prince's music and I didn't find Victoria Wood funny, apart from Acorn Antiques where Julie Walters was hilarious as Mrs Overall. I think we're heading for much more of this celebrity deaths thing simply because there are so many celebrities now. I'm an old fart and when I was growing up we had genuinely famous stars such as John Wayne, Elvis, Robert Mitchum, Sinatra, Brigitte Bardot and other famous people. These were proper 'stars' but now there are just so many 'famous' people it's inevitable that a handful will pop their clogs each week. Ronnie Corbett, a nice enough man, was no giant of comedy as you might think after his recent death but was built up as some sort of icon with all the celebs saying how brilliant he was. Ronnie Barker was terrific but Ronnie Corbett, nothing special. I realise different people like different things so to some he (they) might have been top stars but I think we have to get used to celebs kicking the bucket because there are just so many of them now. Some say I'm grumpy, I wonder why!
Would liked to seen the cut and edited out Peeves from the Harry Potter films - even though he was well paid for playing the poltergeist, I remember reading Rik Mayall was a tad pissed off for not being in the final cut

Yes Comm, I was just thinking of genuinely famous people. She was a stunning looker back in the sixties though. My all time best looker was Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde although Ursula Andress in Doctor No comes a close second. It's all personal opinions though, nothing against Prince or Victoria, just not for me. Lennon and Harrison, Eric Morecambe and Peter Sellars, they are more my type of stars.
