Agree or disagree? Just a quick list for those of us who have lost track of our many managers since Strachan: Steve Wigley (2 spells) Paul Sturrock Harry Redknapp George Burley John Gorman Nigel Pearson Jan Poortvliet Alan Pardew Dean Wilkins (Caretaker Manager) Nigel Adkins Personally for me, Adkins has brought positivity back and has really been a breath of fresh air inside the building. He's definitely got me on the boss, I think everyone in the club is pulling in the same direction, together as one striving to achieve the same common goal. Team morale and morale amongst fans seems to be at its highest for a looonnnggg time. What about you?
I find it quite difficult to compare all of them because they managed us in different divisions and with different players. But Adkins has probably made the biggest difference in terms of moral and also getting the best out of the resources he has available to him.
I have to say yes, I agree with you. Not to take away from Adkins or the effect he has had on our club but look at the state of that list. Onwards and upwards
Sorry, will get a load of stick but i thought Pearson was good for us , a shame the dark lord went for a cheaper option (cost us much more in the end).
Oh it's easily Adkins, and by some distance. Pardew and Burley (and maybe even Sturrock) have merit for sure, but Adkins beats them all hands down.
Pardew? More like PardWHO lol. Seriously though, the vast majority of fans were raging when he was sacked and now he is rarely mentioned and Cortese can do no wrong. It was a gamble I'm very happy paid off.
Early doors, but he is ticking most of the boxes, but watch out for the flak if we get a few dodgy results! Not that that, is going to happen is it, positive thinking only please.....
I won't give him flak if we lose a few games that's for sure, well unless we are bottom at christmas!
I always thought Mark Wotte would have been a good manager. Shame he was never given the job with funds. I think we would of stayed up if we kept Jack Cork at the time too and played Saga And Euell more often. Oh well the future is bright its RED AND WHITE!!!!!
I think Pearson would have done well had we kept him longer, but based on actual records and general feeing around the club, I'd agree with Adkins.
Living near Middlesbrough I talk to a few Boro fans who haven't got a good word for Wee Gordo, even though I tell them he was our best manager ever! Respect to Lawrie, but Gordon was funny with it.
Who are you quoting? Or are you quoting yourself? Adkins has taken us up from League 1. I think Pearson would have been just as good. Burley wasn't bad either as he got us to the Play Offs and we deserved to beat Derby. It just wasn't our day. Pardew was pretty good too.
I agree wit this too, think that Pardew was good, assembling our whole team in a short period of time and doing very well last season, however the way in which Adkins has the players playing and the way that everything is thought out and calculated!
I think we need too see how we get on this season in the champ before we can judge Adkins against our previous managers
We are judging him on effectively just over 3/4 a season. I have to admit he does seem to be one of our better managers. However judgement should perhaps be made when things are going particularly badly for us and we need to see how he copes with that. Also on the same sort of theme, remember too that his experience is limited to the championship and div one. We have had good managers since Strachen, Burley was one and certainly Pearson. At the risk of being shot I do not think Wotte was that bad either, although it is hard to judge. I happen to feel that it does depend on the quality of players you are given to work with, after all you cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear! I can't help feeling we are making a judgement based on the euphoria of just being promoted. That doesn't mean he is not a good manager all I'm saying is he has to prove that at each level we go to. He certainly has built a reputation for div one, two promotions, two different teams. This division though he has not done so well. You could of course argue that he didn't have the financial backing, or the quality of players, can't argue with that. As to the title of best manager.......sorry for that the jury has to be still out.
There is a risk of being shot at there (at least by me any way), but it has nothing to do with suggesting that Wotte wasn't bad
First promotion in 33 years? Lowest goals conceded in donkey's years? Record winning streak? Come on, that's not a bad first season, especially when we were 22nd when NA took over. I think our Nige is well on his way to being a legend, if he's not there already.
Can't disagree with that Chilco......he is on his way......but he does have a way to go before I would call him our best manager since strachan or even a legend.
