Rumour has it we will have a Sir David Beckham in the next honours list
Well in my opinion there is a long list of football people that should be or should have been honoured long before dear David

Bill Shankly and Bill Nicholson for starters who both gained respect and imitators worldwide after producing complete culture change for the better in English Football?

Any un-knighted member of the "66" world cup winning squad

Paul Scholes Peter Beardsley Gary Linneker Tony Adams Alan Shearer and many more offered genuine world class skills and application at a higher level than DB

No doubt the self seeking DB offered love for his country but the record book clearly shows he was lacking at the very highest level which cannot be said of those above and many others we could all think of given time

Football deserves recognition in most honours compilation but please let the choices be meaningful

Is it me or is Beckham underrated as a footballer? The guy was phenomenal for United and England between 1999 and 2003. The amount of assists he clocked up was unreal. You say Paul Scholes Peter Beardsley Gary Linneker Tony Adams Alan Shearer offered genuine world class skills and application at a higher level than DB but i disgree. Beckham came 2nd in a Fifa World player of the year and like i said was outstanding for a four year spell. The failure of Madrid as a team with Beckham in it was not down to him. They sacked a manager who was world class for no reason and paid for it. He still won something there in the end. Coming back after getting dropped and again creating goals after goals in the winning run Madrid where on in the race for the title.

Should he be a sir? Hell no.

Is he underrated as a footballer? Without a doubt, imo.

SSN8, I kind of agree with you, why was everyone gutted when he done his metatarsal on the run up to a WC.

As for Sir, I hope not, I don't see his achievements warrant any such recognition.

However, his friendship with Wills is worrying, The Beckhams, friends of the King of England one day! <yikes>...it shouldn't be possible, royalty socialising with commoners and riff-raff.

So he is about to join a 'club' founded by a bunch of self seeking, land grabbing, muderous bastards keen to continue their 1000 year old domination. No surprise there then.

Its not his football which he would get knighted for its his services to the country he acts as an international marketing tool for our country and help bring the London 2012 games to London etc

He didn't bring the 2012 games to London

He did however fail epically in the World Cup bid

    Why?

Because the rest of the world doesn't share the British media and politician obsession with Beckham

I think he did actually have a part in achieving the 2012 Olympics, so for that reason that is a non argument.

I don;t agree with a knighthood as of yet as he hasn't done enough for the game, but if he continues as he is at the moment, sure why not? In my opinion he's a great ambassador who shows what you can achieve with hard work. When i see criticism of the likes of Beckham, it suprises me when you have so many other players who don't put in half the effort he does.

'Paul Scholes Peter Beardsley Gary Linneker Tony Adams Alan Shearer' All good players, but bar Lineker, none of them really did it for their country. Many will say Beckham didn't but you only need to see his assists record to see he was a fantastic servant to England. Also none of them has carried out promotion of the game and sport in general like he has. I think he should be commended, just not with a knighthood

His Knighthood has nothing to do with football. How could it? As has been said, there are many more deserving cases than the stubbly chinned one. He is a media personality with a very efficient publicity machine that gets him lots of coverage for doing not a lot. The word "honour" should be changed really.....

As NSIS says, the only problem with this is having a "Lady" Beckham. Giving her the nickname Posh must have been ironic?

When you're knighted the Queen confirms it with something thin and cold, that is only useful for one day of the year. Will VB get jealous?

Yes. I should imagine that, whoever was responsible for that brilliant idea, is keeping his, or her, head well down

David Beckham is being knighted for services to David Beckham.

Then again, can anyone tell me what Dave Richards was knighted for? Services to Sheffield United fans?
