It was certainly based upon Chapman's ideas. However I was really thinking about the W shaped forward line. By the time that I was playing and watching football (late 50s) the backline had become flatter and the left and right halves had moved closer to the centre of the pitch. Even as late as 1965 Liverpool won their first FA Cup with 5 forwards.

If he can remeber playing with 5 forwards then he has to be at least as old as me - and nobody feels as old as me!:emoticon-0100-smile

Please keep your posts "on topic".This is meant to be a thread about footballing formations, not about member's ages or about people's nocturnal activities in fields with our beautiful wooly four legged friends <ok>

When Chapman introduced the W M it was seen as a retrogade step which would make football more defensive as it saw the introduction of the "stopper centre half"Chapman was once quoted as saying that at the start of a football match you have 0 points and if you didn't concede a goal you would gain at least one point. This was obviously in the days of two points for a win

re Barcelona - the difference with them is they do not play a centre forward at all. In fact Villa typically stays wide left (as Henry did before him) and Pedro and Messi interchange between being central and being on the right of the front 3.

It is this fluidity in their front 3 that causes defences the problems more so than the formation itself. Coupled with the fact that they really play 4-1-2-3 as Busquets rarely gets ahead of the ball and Xavi & Iniesta play behind the front 3 predominately although have licence to interchange with Messi when he drops deep to pick up the ball and run at defences.

You're normally first on those subjects and I would have thought you'd have loved the attention<ok>

With regards to this fred, it's on the Chelsea board for some reason and I contributed earlier.

I'm the OP and I put it on the Chelsea board as they are users of a 4-3-3 formation and have been successful using it.
