Afternoon all, interested to hear what you guys think would happen if Madrid come back with an offer for De Gea this summer.

He's yet again been one of the standout players in another season where we have struggled.
If Van Gaal stays or goes there is likely to be a period of time over the summer and into the new season where the players continue to struggle either whilst getting to grips with the new managers tactics or carrying on as they are now under van gaals guidance as he tries to come up with a line up and tactics that work.

I feel if he goes in the summer an already difficult situation is exacerbated and the current problems within the team will take even longer to resolve.

    What do you guys think?

I suspect that much the same deal was done with DDG as was the case with Ronaldo - give us one more season then you can go. We don't really need him, Van der Sar is in magnificent form at the moment.

Van Gaal cannot leave soon enough. I am absolutely positive that with the right manager we will have a marked, immediate and sustained improvement. If you look at many of the seasoned successful clubs (not new money clubs like City or Chelsea) you'll see there are plenty of examples of how the right appointment can have a positive change.

Regarding De Gea, they may very well come back. I wouldn't begrudge him the move. Tbh I'm more concerned about Herrera leaving. I also think Januzaj has never been developed properly and may end up being sold.

I think we'll lose both Herrera and De Gea in the summer. Both are far too good to be plodding along in the situation LVG has dragged the club into. De Gea will go to Real for the release clause amount and I wouldn't be surprised if Barca came in for Herrera. He's an absolute gem of a player.

I think any player will wait to see what the management situation is before making any decision about their future. I can see Herrera being the type of player Jose might like to keep (a future captain for me if he stays) the same for De Gea, Jose would definitely want to keep hold of the best keeper in the world (although Navas hasn't been too shabby for RM should it come to that). The BIG problem for me as far as transfers is concerned are the Euros. De Gea will be playing/rooming with most of the RM team - if his head needs turning any further it will be during the tournament - the same for Herrera if he gets picked for the senior Spanish squad.

The other negative is the price of players who manage to do well in the tournament - even a few good group games can double the price of a mediocre talent, especially once the agent finds out we are interested.

I would be mildly surprised if de Gea left but not shocked, he seem very laid back and just happy to play, not the type to push for a move if he felt wanted.
Herrera I would almost expect to want out, he has been victimised and shat on by van Gaal far too many times, it has to be something personal. I would hate to see him go but for his sake it might be necessary.

He's amazing - could even argue the best, if not top 3 in the world.

    Definitely shouldn't sell him.

He's got you lots of points this season.

He does remind of the Inesta type of player, his movement and intelligence on the ball is superb.

How can you argue "the best, if not top 1 in the world".

That doesn't make sense. They're the same thing.

Plus, my point was you could argue he is the best, but if you don't think he is then you could at least put him top 3.

Yeah I agree. He will go for a price he can't say no. Everybody has a price. Now loyalty comes with money.

    Isn't the release clause a meagre 30million?

Not that meagre for a keeper although I agree meagre for such a good player.

Not for a keeper in general. But one of De Gea standard and still of such a young age pretty poor. Although you got another year out of him (potentially still longer) and more money than you would have last summer. Not all bad.

Who would you replace him with? I would have said Butland but he seems to have dropped off a bit recently.

Liverpool won't let a world class talent leave easily.

Probably Navas - Real were willing to use him as a make weight last summer, so no reason they wouldn't do again this year.
