I'm wondering what style of play we will adopt with the new look squad? From what I've seen/heard of Ba he is an old fashioned target man, so the old Barton out wide continually crossing to Carroll might resurrect itself. Never quite worked with Shola.

There again, HBA is one hell of a direct player....a bit like Rooney, always lining up a dig at goal. At Darlo I thought he kept hold a shade too long to line up his shots, often overlooking better placed players. Hope he's more free with the passing.

Cabaye looks the real deal; a superb playmaker who can slot balls through defences etc. Very comfortable on the ball. Thing is if we sign a pacey striker ( Defoe was mentioned today!!!) alongside Ba, then surely something or someone has to give in midfield. We've got 5 quality choices and we always play 4 at the back......Check surely gets pencilled in first, then HBA ( I know he's injured), then Cabaye..leaves Marveaux and Joey to fight for one spot.

Anyway, I love the options we now have.

    Vive le TOON!!!!!!:smiley-finger007:

Why the difference? Is 4-5-1 more defensive?

4-5-1 controls midfield, 4-4-2 is more attack minded

I'm concerned Pardew feels he needed to change it to be honest. If he thinks we can play pretty football and get results we could end up in serious ****

4-3-3 / 4-4-2 at home, then 4-5-1 away from home, Give Ba 65 mins then Defoe/Erding 25, switch to 4-4-2 maybe if we're losing. I think pardews recognises the change is necessary as last year if Plan A didn't work we had no idea of how to change it, and no hint of a Plan B

Style of play will always depend on who is on the field of play.

not necessarily. why Carr is probably scouting certain types of players to fit the system. yes if all our strikers were injured we wouldn't persist with a 4-4-2, but to an extent at a professional club who are able to buy and sell players you can sign players to suit the system

so if we happened to have lovenkrands upfront by himself, we would continue to play route 1?

did i say that ? If we are working on a system of play it will do us more harm than good to change it, players will be drilled in it, everything they do in the game, all off the ball movement etc will be with the system in mind so therefore we will most likely stick to it unless in extreme circumstances. I dont think Lovenkrands should even be here next season. Sameobi is a better option

continue to play route one, when did we play it last season? Or are you suggesting that one upfront means it'll be route one?

we should just stick with 4-4-2 rather than start trying to be clever and ****ing up Hughtons good work.

this is a good point, 4-5-1 would not always mean a lump it up to a big man mentality to knock it down, we'd have two wingers getting at defences, which in turn opens up more holes for the striker to exploit.. Lovenkrands if needed will carry out his role effectively, clever player

but Hughtons good work was for the old set of players, it was just get it onto carrolls head if i remember rightly, or knock it down for Nolan. We're developing as a team creatively now. or it at least seems so with Marveaux, Abeid and cabaye having that bit of flair.

    4-5-1

    Barton-Tiote
    Marv-Cabaye-Jose
    Ba

Cabaye playing there till Arfa returns then rotate with Barton when fit

If anything 4-5-1 means less hoof ball, it's more focused on controlling midfield and passing football...
