New broom sweeps clean and £200m buys a lot of sweeping. I suspect he will go the same way as Hughes did at City. What do others think?
Exceptionally overrated manager IMO. If his name was Bob Martins and his teams defend like Wigan did and Everton do he'd be nowhere near a job like Everton's
Disagree. Think he's quality with some real class. Think he's also the victim of Everton thinking they are a much bigger club than they really are - many Everton fans still seriously think Moyes under-achieved there whereas I think he did an incredible job on (relatively) limited resources.
Everton are a huge club with some excellent players. To have their squad and not be anywhere near the CL places is scandalous. I can't believe there's not more pressure on the manager.
I would like to see a club that gets a huge new investment, make changes gradually and invest in the manager as well as playing staff. Would be quite refreshing !!
Martinez pulled Wigan out of relegation year after year with teams that looked very well organised often in 3 5 2, and got players of below average PL ability playing with skill and fight, beating the top teams. Everton are where they always are in mid table, and spot on for their investment and size.
I think that's largely them accepting their place. Were it not for the ban on English clubs in Europe robbing their best ever side of a chance to establish itself on a larger stage, they could easily be an elite club. Their fanbase is massive, they have a plethora of exciting players, young and old, but are level on points with West Brom and behind Watford. I'd expect a team with Lukaku, Baines, Coleman, Stones, Barkley and other excellent players to do more than a lower mid-table finish.
I'd like to see him get a chance to prove himself at a club with a bigger budget. He's done well at keeping smaller/midsize clubs achieving what they should achieve, the test will be whether he can invest wisely, build a team and get them to push upwards. Sadly most investors would rather back an experienced manager to achieve this, but I hope Martinez gets a chance.
I think his record is pretty poor. He has a tendency to take his clubs (Everton and Wigan) backwards when it comes to league finishes, that's what he should be judged on, right? Everton had in 7 consecutive seasons before he took over finished between 5th and 8th. In his first season he kept them in that area, finishing 5th. Last season they finished 11th under him, now they sit in 10th with arguably the best squad they've possesed since the 80's. At Wigan he could never recreate the positions Paul Jewell and Steve Bruce achieved. Jewell had them as high as 10th, and in Steve Bruce' last season they finished 11th. Martinez finished 16th, 16th, 15th and 18th (relegated) in the four following seasons there. He won a cup, not sure Wigan fans would swap that with where they are now though. His football is entertaining to watch, I'll give him that.
I would be happy with League One if QPR won the FA Cup. Any time in my lifetime will do, but soon would be nice.
I'd happily spend a lifetime in League 1 for an FA Cup. Still, I think you have to judge a manager on his league performance mainly.
He must wish he had Villa to play every match - believe he is safe for this season with their usual finish, just outside Europa League places, unless they get lucky with one of those fair play spots or cup outcomes.
New money in = old manager out. The new owners might not like the fact that he says "cloob" instead of "club".
Another three goals conceded at home. The bloke just cannot coach a defence. He'll be lucky to still be there next season. Mythinez
