I know someone mentioned this on one of the daily threads but thought it worth putting up a separate thread for yet another literary masterpiece from Alistair Down. A superbly written piece. www.racingpost.com/news/horse-racing/the-memory-of-that-win-will-always-be-imperishably-happy/2039111/
Superb piece. Apparently he won a top sports writers award a week or so back, deservedly so. Channel 4's decision to put him out to grass was beyond stupid. Probably decided he was to highbrow for the new audience it was looking to attract.
I hate the way popular media has to try and dumb everything down to Ant and Dec level. There is a little known film called Idiocracy, which on the face of it is a pretty crap comedy, but if you look beyond that it is a very scary portrayal of there the human race might end. Well worth a watch
Fantastic article- superbly written loved the bit 'On that Friday the racing press and wider media were in Norfolk watching a cyclist fall off a horse' but the man is a wizard of words
What an amazing article, the breadth of his expertise is astounding. Time after time I found myself affected by the manner in which he dealt with the subject of death, infusing it back into the piece in such stark terms was rather confronting.
I've only just got round to reading this. As usual he finds the words that make all the difference. Bit of a tear jerker. Reminded me a bit of when we were at a major show jumping event in Wales and Amanda's dad had a heart attack at the show. Luckily paramedics were quickly on the scene and saved him and he was taken to hospital. Amanda, jumping at the show, said I'm going to win this for dad. Win it she did and the giant smile on his face when we arrived at his bedside and she showed him the trophy, sash and rosette. He actually survived that, although no longer with us. You just don't forget things like that. I was hoping she might ride a winner for me one day, until she had that horrific car crash.
