Given we have a 50% chance of reaching the final, what is the chance of winning the next round?

To reach the final we need to win the round of 16, and the round of 8, and the round of 4, so P(16)*P(8)*P(4)=0.5

Let's assume as an approximation that each round's opponents are about the same odds (in reality Man Utd are slighly easier but this is just a simplification) so P(16)=P(8)=P(4)

P(16)^3=0.5

So P(16)=0.5^(1/3)=0.7937

So about an 80% chance of winning the next round (and more like the 90% I said if you take into account later opponents are more difficult)

So the real math (as opposed to whatever that bollox you posted was) is that there are 2 possible outcomes, Liverpool or Utd progress, ergo 50%
