Down in Southampton today for Dinner with one of my suppliers. The great Peter Shilton OBE is the after dinner speaker. I going to ask him what went through his mind.when he had the collision with Paul Cheesly which ended his football career. Be interesting to hear his view on it.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that he won't particularly like being asked that. Still, let us know if he does have anything to say.
He didn't "take out" Paul. My take on it at the time was that they both went for a ball in the air and Cheesley landed badly on the leg that had given him knee problems for most of the promotion season. It is very probable that if that same injury happened now, medical and surgical advances would have sorted it out.
Why should he answer a question like that when it was a pure accident, it happened just in front of me & PC just landed akwardly...along with the career ending injury to Gerry Sharpe, it was one of my saddest memories of all my years going to see my beloved City.
What a stupid thing to say, if you were there like i was, it was a complete accident, by the way he's probably never heard of PC, don't embarrass yourself RR.
I was there also, Shilton landed on Cheesley after they both went for the ball in the air. I've always had my doubts. I've never seen a replay, as they do these days from all angles, but only Shilton knows if it was deliberate.

Injury Just three days after the victory at Arsenal, City were playing again, at home to Stoke City. It was during this game that, in one brutal moment, Cheesley’s promising career was ended. A cross came into the box and he rose to challenge England 'keeper Peter Shilton for the ball, getting there first and heading over. It was a harmless-looking clash but he landed badly, ripping his cartilage, tearing ligaments and chipping a bone in his knee. At the age of 23, and with a blossoming career ahead of him, he was taken off and never ran back onto the pitch in a City shirt again. Despite an attempted comeback he was forced to retire from league football with just one more appearance to his name . He went on to have spells with non-league clubs, including Yeovil Town. Well had a cracking day and what a guy Peter Shilton is,he loved Brian Clough should have been England manager. Best player he played with was Glen Hoddle even though he was lazy . Bobby Robson pre match talk could go on for 1 to 1.5 hours before the game. Biggest disappointment was the hand of god goal,could not believe that was ever given. Terry Bucher was the best centre half, and warrior he played with. Him and Ray Clemence were really close and buddy's when away they bunked up together. Gutted ref Paul Cheesley a 50/50 ball and was so sad it ended his career. I found him genuine and a credit to his profession.
