This is where I think it betters Breaking Bad.

Search Netflix for Nebraska, Bob Odenkirk is in it, top film.

Went to see the Dad's Army film last night. From the off they were on a hiding to nothing - knowing the much-loved TV series me and my fella still watch avidly on BBC 2 along with millions of others - but having read the reviews I thought it better than I expected; the plot was OK and Toby Jones was great as Mainwaring. My fella, on the other hand, not having read the reviews, was sorely disappointed, though he knew the general concensus of opinion and he thought with the cast like Jones, Gambon, Nighy, Paterson, Courtney et al it could have been better.

I agree with him when he says it worked better when they were trying not to be Dad's Army; ie, putting their own stamp on it without the old catchphrases and cliches from the telly series. When the old original phrases came in it didn't work and wasn't funny: stupid boy, we're doomed, they don't like it up 'em - but introducing Mrs Mainwaring who you never see in the series was a spark of inspired writing, along with her ATS ladies like Mrs Pike and Mrs Fox: where the ATS had to fire at the Germans and the kickback from the guns set them back on their backsides was funny. There was a lot of innuendo too which was a bad move and Courtney as Corporal Jones' confusion with words didn't come in until near the end, too late. That said, it was a nice touch to have the original actor playing the vicar and Ian Lavendar (original Pike) as the general. There's not much of Hodges, the ARP warden.

All-in-all not too bad, but they missed a trick by not making their own mark on it; they were trying too hard to make it like the original TV series and it couldn't have worked because those old actors are now long gone; nobody did it better.

    3/5 from me.

I hear there's about to be a remake of Are You Being Served in a series! No way will that work! <doh>

  9. Dad's Army was before my time. I remember it because my parents used to watch it but I was too young to be interested in it

Good point. I'm surprised England hasn't revoked his visa yet. Need to up the security on the border to stop Welsh terrorists coming over and bumming English sheep.

It's free to get into Engerland, we have a bridge where the English have to pay to come into Wales.
