Classic case of Labour shooting themselves in the foot, that. It was discussed at a party conference around 1977, but the idea was shelved because the brothers considered home ownership a capitalist aspiration.

The right to buy was a good thing was it? Selling off social housing at knock down prices and not replacing them which has led us to our current predicament of little social housing and slum landlords getting rich off the tax payer due to extortionate rents for substandard accommodation. You think that was a step forward?

Sounds like a step back to victorian times for me.

The right to buy was very much a great idea ... Why pay all that money in rent and house improvements for some **** else to get the benefit .

Any of your relatives buy theirs ?

But it has became flawed . Not replacing them ... Bad idea

As I said , you can pick and choose your good n bad bits.

The right to buy was a good idea. Not allowing councils to replace their declining stock was wicked.

Yes quite a few of my relatives did. The point is you have to look at the bigger picture. You can't say the right to buy was a great idea but not replacing the stock was a bad idea. Both points are part of the one idea. Do you think that the Tories didn't know what they were doing when they refused to let profits from council house sales go to building new council houses?

So ultimately, the state of the situation now would suggest it was a bad idea, don't ya think?

No ... Still a great idea. And you can look at both in isolation , to say different would be churlish .

What have successive uk governments and Scottish governments done about helping the social housing issue ? **** all ...

It's not all maggies or the big bad tories fault ... They implemented a brilliant idea but maybe didn't see the bigger picture , hindsight eh ...

Aye , maybe they did but that still doesn't get away from it being one of the many good things Maggie did and the fact that no other prime or first minister has decided to do anything about it ...

Other prime minister, like who? John Major, Tory Blair, Gordon Downy Brown, Call me Dave?

In saying that Call me Dave is doing something about it. He is extending it to housing associations just to make the whole affordable housing thingy even worse.

So , you answered my question ...

The lack of social housing is not big bad maggies fault then. No one has addressed the lack of housing for social tenants . No one ...not even the socialist republic of Scotland .

So we can move on from this.

I think you should move to Cuba or reanimate Michael foot.

    Or join the green brigade.

Selling council stock was a great idea, not replacing even some of it with the money raised was a bad idea

Actually, compared to the labour party the SNP have been very good at building social housing and council houses.

Unfortunately we can't move on from it because the right to buy has been extended to housing associations. I think I already mentioned that.

Oh , that's everywhere but Scotland. The Tories by stealth SNP have actually cancelled the right to buy and have refused to adopt the new extension to housing association properties.

So it would seem at least one Scottish government has done something about it eh?

I disagree with stopping it ... It should still be available after a qualifying period of a certain number of years and you should not be able to sell it on until after another set period .

Look i haven't got a problem with the right to buy your council house. It's a good thing. It helps people who could not afford to buy their own home to do so if they wish.

My problem is that when the Tories brought the legislation in the made sure that any profits would not be used to build more council houses. They ring fenced that money. They knew exactly what they were doing Pud.

There is no need for hindsight. What's happening now was always going to happen and they knew what the ultimate outcome would be. This is not a situation that has suddenly appeared out of the blue. It's cause and affect.

Do they care? Do they try to right the wrong?

Do they ****. They bring in legislation that is going to make the situation a whole lot worse.

    It's political dogma run wild.

    Never a good idea.
