Plans have been submitted to Hull City Council for the city's pioneering University Technical College (UTC). please log in to view this image The £10m employer-led academy will specialise in digital technology and mechatronics – a combination of computing and engineering. Hull City Council allocated a brownfield site between Kingston Square and Worship Street in the city centre for the development. The planning application states the UTC “represents an opportunity for a new landmark building ... of educational, community and architectural significance.” “It will transform the delivery of learning and will benefit a widernetwork of educational and business organisations across the Hull and EastRiding area.” – RON DEARING UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE The UTC building would comprise a research centre, project planning and design area, manufacturing workshops and a conference centre. There would also be a sheltered external area, branded as the “Arena”, for testing and demonstration of project prototypes and models, such as robots, drones and remote-controlled vehicles. "Submitting this planning application is a key milestone in the delivery of an entirely new and hugely exciting educational model for the city. The design of the UTC is intended to regenerate and enhance a key city centre site. Crucially, it will also enable and support the businesslike ethos of the UTC and its focus on students learning through the development and delivery of projects inspired by the sponsor employers and directly relevant to the needs of industry." – CHARLIE SPENCER OBE, CHAIR OF THE RON DEARING UTC TRUST / EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF SPENCER GROUP The UTC – named after Hull-born Ron Dearing, an educational reformer who promoted technical and vocational education – is set to open in September 2017, with up to 120 students. Ultimately it will accommodate up to 600 students, aged 14 to19. http://www.itv.com/news/calendar/2016-02-15/plans-submitted-for-landmark-technical-college-in-hull/
The old central police station has just gone up for sale, was there ever a more perfect site for a hotel? please log in to view this image
Architectural significance? Its not very imaginative or iconic is it? Just another box that will look outdated in 15 years - surely that area deserves better than that?
It's rather better than the thing it's replacing... please log in to view this image It needs to be a modern building, it needs to contrast with the Georgian houses and the New Theatre.
It's all change in that part of town. I remember new plans for the New Theatre were mentioned on here some months back.
I like contemporary and think it's the right way to go for this site - just think that the proposed building lacks imagination and will soon look outdated.
Interesting the use of the word landmark, is there anything built in the last say 20 years that will still be there in 100 years? It seems to be easier and no doubt cheaper to put up a steel frame and clad it to make a hotel, school, office block or whatever you care to name. Where are the landmark buildings of the future?
As much as this college might be a good idea, can anyone imagine a worse place for 600, 14-19 year old kids to be gathering everyday? The only garden Square we have in the city centre filled with teenagers eating their takeaways and cans of coke. Kingston Square is a rather special place in Hull and it should celebrated for it's charm and tranquility. Surley there are so many other place around the city that would be more suitable.
What's this mean for Hull College I wonder? Their Park St annex closes in the summer and I can see even more potential students being lured away.
It's not much of a garden square nowadays please log in to view this image It was often not very calm and tranquil either, after all, this building was previously Hull Central Fire Station.
Pioneering, landmark. Throw in iconic and the new buzz phrase public realm and that's all the bases covered.
It's obviously a stretch to describe it as a 'landmark' building, but that should detract from what a good development it is for the city.
the design of this "Landmark" building doesnt do justice to its description , nor its intended use . It looks like they just recessed the curtain walls on the ever do depressing current build :/ meh!
Business leaders say Hull's £10m Ron Dearing UTC will bring 'new generation of talent' to city... http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Busi...tory-28739266-detail/story.html#ixzz40Lmx1D2q
