For some reason I enjoyed the 4-3 loss away at Leeds in 1990 as much as any other game I've been to, because the atmosphere from us at Elland Road was so fantastic. They won thanks to a dodgy ref adding 7 minutes on enabling Strachan to get a winner in the 96th
We held our position on Sledmere as long as we could til the Mancs started pushing the big wooden gates over from Kempton, then we legged it over training pitch fence, it was frigging high but I was 19 and fit as **** then
Beating Luton at the KC in 2004. First game at the KC my dad went too, and in fact last. Was his birthday and I got us both tickets for it as a surprise. Never seen anyone get ready and in the car so quick. We drove round his old haunts before the game. Never expected to win either. Luton were flying high with that scouse **** as their manager. 3-0 with a couple from Elliot. Great day that.
The other thing from that game was the " Hull Reds " getting battered in the bottom corner of Kempton when we went two up.
So many over the year, though Waggy swing around the post at Stamford bridge when he scored to make it 2-2 in the FA cup 6th round. Huddlestones goal at Wembley against the blunts in the 5-3 win. Deano's goal at Wembley against Bristol City.
I was there as well! I was at Hymers with him - always one to have on your side at the dinner time kick around.
Up there for me are these 3, the first 2 being in memory of my dad and granddad who never experienced such moments in all their years of supporting City. 1. The final whistle at Wembley in 2008 which gave us Top Tier football for the first time. 2. The team walking out at Wembley to compete in our first ever FA Cup Final. 3. Wagstaff's equalising goal in the FA Cup 6th round at Stamford Bridge being part of the best and proudest day of my life as a Hull City supporter.
The equalizer Barmby scored just before half-time against Watford in the 2nd leg of the playoff semi-final. For me that was the pivotal moment in our club's history. It totally demoralized them & blew their fightback to smithereens. Of course, another Hull lad finished the job a short time later. Perfect script.
Can't watch those highlights of the FA Cup Final without getting emotional, and never watch past Davies goal/Bruce's header depending on the highlights package.
Liverpool in the FA Cup Late 80s. 2-1 up at half time courtesy of Big Billy, and Mr Edwards. I don't think i had ever celebrated a half time quite like that up to that point. The whole of Kempton was rocking whereas normally everyone used to get pies and read the program.
Hillsborough 2004 was my favourite City match. Johnny Eyre scoring the only goal in the Division 3 (now League 2) playoffs 1st leg at Boothferry Park against Leyton Orient, and the 15K+ crowd going mental. A lot in the Kempton & Bunkers ended up kicking down the hoardings and running on the pitch in jubilation. Unfortunately, they beat us in the 2nd leg Damien Delaney scoring a spectacular goal made all by himself, out of nothing. We were awful that day and all. The last game at Boothferry Park, & Darlo coming to spoil the party in front of a great crowd. I remember we couldn't hit a barn door that day and missed some absolute sitters in front of open goals as well. The first match v Sunderland & the first league match vs Hartlepool on the Boxing Day. The night we had massive queues snaking round the KC to get in for the Swansea match only for the coppers to give the whole north stand to a handful of away fans who'd made it. Still had a great turnout & a great atmosphere. Made all the better by Stuart Elliott scoring to put us top of the league.
You got to town...i was a thirteen & had to get down Pickering road! only comfort was all the change rattling in my pockets that i'd accuired after the mass melee outside bunkers (happy days eh).
I think the game you were thinking of v Wallsall at home September12th 1978,we won 4-1. My other highlights. are some already mentioned Waggys goals against Chelsea and Stoke Waggy X first goal for City v Exeter November 64, I knew he was special from then! Beating the Blunts 2-1 at Brammall lane 1971 Mally lord getting a hat trick against Burnley Billy Wilky RIP scoring against Everton fa cup 64 4-4 against Owls 1970 when we're were 4-1 down. With 15 minutes to go And finally November 1984 winning 5-4 at Orient again being down 1-4,and one losing game 4-0 at Home Park to Plymouth 1987it was pissing down at the end ,we were not allowed to leave by the Police in the open end We started singing the Hovis theme tune at the time and one of the coppers said you are all mad you Northerners. That is so true but we are proud!
That's a great shout. It's not mentioned that often, but it is actually one of my favourite goals of all time. For the reasons you mention and that it epitomised Nick Barmby and what we want to see from every player - 100% commitment. Just watch him in the build up to getting that vital touch; nothing was going to stop him. There is (was) one of those big canvas pictures of him 'in flight' at that vital moment that was hanging in one of the KC suites; I would love that picture for home. For many years, John Hawley's goal v Sunderland was my favourite. Was there. Remember it like yesterday. In the days when you started near the top of bunkers then after such a goal you ended up somewhere near the bottom. I was sure it was something like a 30 yarder. Gobsmacked in later years to see it again and realise it was almost a tap in! Great goal though, remembered almost as much for the celebrations.
I think it was the winning goal in the last minute (or perhaps equaliser), and the first game I saw will have been early 80s, so can't have been 70s.
