The whole Amy Johnson 'Jason' hire discussion made me wonder why Hull doesn't look to invest in a Science and Industry based museum. Hull and the local area has a rich history with innovation in science and industry and it is a shame we can't showcase it like the MOSI in Manchester all be it on a smaller scale. Exhibits could include. Humber Cars North Sea Gas Exploration Don Suddaby (Lorenzo's Oil) Blackburn Aeroplane & Motor Company North Sea Ferries & the Port Kingston Communication (Digital Industry) The UK's first Hydraulic Power network - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_power_network Humber Bridge (River Humber and River Hull). Professor George Gray (Liquid Crystal Displays) BP Smith & Nephew Reckitts There is so much to go at but nobody appears to have tried to pull it together. My ideal home for all this would be the Lord Line building and the dock basin (refurbished of course). Although it is a bit far from the town centre. Maybe in town somewhere but not sure of the site, maybe by the side of Myton Bridge on the site someone wanted a hotel (King Billy side) which would keep it in the Museum Quarter. Thoughts?? A lot of stuff would be at a low cost to the council once the building is built but there are enough global companies to support/sponsor such a development and enough museums to lend exhibits. Oh and maybe include Barnes Wallis for his airship work at Howden...
They have tried to brand us a pioneering city before but without linking up our story in a museum. Local shipbuilding & aviation definitely, there was a link to Amy Johnson and Australia Day yesterday did you know the largest ship in the first fleet was built in Hull? The importance of the railways also, Hull to Leeds was very early and completed before a transpennine link to Manchester because Yorkshire needed a quick wool export route to the port. We were integral to the new northern powerhouse with imports of iron ore and pit props through Hull, we fueled the industrial revolution and fed the industrial workers of the north by getting cheap high protein fish quickly onto fish trains before refrigeration. Needs to be an old town attraction, forget the Lord Line building.
Often thought the same especially after visiting the one in Warsaw. The recently demolished Rank building would have been perfect.
I was in town today and thought about maybe the Old Edwin Davis building. The venue doesn't need to be massive but I'm sure with a bit of assistance from structural engineers you would get a Hawk Jet in there and a few cars. It was a department store so it would take a bit of weight! Or somewhere like this site. http://www.scotts-property.co.uk/properties/dock-office-row Back of the college couple of dry docks which could have either a floating or suspended craft. Space for a hanger and a Hawk/Harrier.
