Watch the game and tell me how he played better than dire? I'm being serious. Point it out and I will take back the dire comment. All I saw was him giving it away with his poor touch, passing to the opposition and not tackling.

Basso was alright I thought. I don't get this "he looked nervy at the start" nonsense either. His first touch was a quality save to deny Downing. Had that incident with the back pass and got caught in nowhere land a couple of times but other than that was alright.

I quite liked the look of Evans, but that's just my opinion

I think the staring 11 yesterday will be first choice, but swapping Cairney for McKenna and McShane for Hobbs

    You forgot Simpson for Mclean.

And Cairney has given some food for thought in the pre-seasons, he looks to have found his Premier League form again.

I agree with you about Cairney and Simpson, but gut feeling says it'll be McKenna and McLean

Cairney looked quite imperious at times, think he's played himself right into contention, that's why I always like to say never write young players off, they can come good again when they lose form.

simpson and mcleans an odd one, i feel with mclean in the side the rest of the team will score more, he has a good touch and thinking, simpsons a poacher and a great goal scorer but is more of a last man striker, he'll score more goals than mclean but i dont think our passing game will be as good.

Corry Evans is the first man in my midfield. He played that one terrible pass in the first half - to say his first touch is 'dire' because of that one incident is a ridiculous comment.

I can't recall the several occassions he gave the ball away either... :emoticon-0108-speec

    Are you joking?

McLean's second touch, a lot of the time, is a tackle. He's strong and can leap like a kangaroo but his technical side lets him down. Simpson plays a bit like Wayne Rooney, he drops behind Fryatt and tries to get hold of the ball but is also there in the clinical positions. He'll score more and he'll help our passing more, rather than a great work ethic.

    No-brainer for me... Simpson>McLean.

Charles Darwin's 1859 theory on the Origin of the Species stated that he believed there was a missing link in the chain of ascension from the great ape to humanoids. Writing as a person who has visited Japan many times and lived there for almost three years I consider that he would have found that link in Japan. Where they have learned the meaning and application of logic is most definitely not in the human line of ascension from the great apes!

I gotta give some credit to McLean and Fryatt, even though they didn't produce anything.
They stressed the ****e out of Pools back 4, causing them to loose the ball quickly (failed longballs, etc)

    I noticed that too!

I think I must have been watching a different McShane to everyone else. I thought his defending (particularly in the first half) was awful - he regularly was caught out of position and lost his man. His clearances barely made it out of the 18 yard box. That said, his forays forward in the second half were impressive.

Other than a 5 minute spell in the first half when his control and passing deserted him, I thought Chester was very good.

Was very impressed with Brady, both as an attacking force and working back.

I also agree with the poster who mentioned the good work by McLean in harrying Liverpool's defence. It often resulted in hopeful long balls, or them giving the ball away.

If McKenna gets caught in possession but Evans gives the ball away what is the difference we lose possession either way.

The bit i dont agree with with Mcshane, is His top class tackle on Ngog, He got caught wrong side of his man which he shouldnt of done in the first place, it was a desperation tackle which could of gone either way and he shouldnt of put himself in that position.

His clearances were rushed, he almost gifted was it Downing a goal?

Fair enough he battled and worked hard , but sadly the ability is lacking a bit, compare him to Chester who was Daddy cool with his defending very calm and collected, and theres a huge difference, get Bradley played in the Bradford and Chesterfield games see how he copes, looks a man mountain!!!

Agreed, it was a great tackle but it never should have got there. But on the other hand, many defenders would have given up after the initial mistake.

It was most evident at Ferriby when they were just banging long balls at us all through the 1st half. Every one that was on Hobbs side he was in the exact right place very early and headed it exactly where he needed to. If it was on McShane's side he was staring at the ball in the sky and running around in circles trying to find a decent position and he'd eventually head it but fall over at the same time, with Hobbs anxiously watching on, ready to cover for him.

I think it's a positioning thing more than anything. He wouldn't have to work half as hard if he was in the right place in the first place.
