A miserable night at the Liberty. Our own errors were exacerbated by a totally inept performance by the officials leading to zero points in a key relegation battle.

On current form we are heading for the Championship. Since the Watford game we have gained only 11 points in 17 Premier League games. That’s an average of 0.65 points per game (which over a season equates to 25 points). That’s how shocking our form is.

Since Alan Curtis has taken over we have seen improved performances but our points per game ratio is still only 0.8

It would help if we could score in the second half at the Liberty! It's an incredible (and unwanted!) statistic.

 

We get nervous at home when we score first after going so long without wins . Now that we've won a few close ones that way we should settle a bit imo

 

We are minus 18 points down on last season? If we were having last season this year, we would currently be in 4th!

Hmmmm....the guy has a point regarding the recent shenanigans but he is also having a go at the Board for sacking a Manager who wasn't getting results - yet because he's "English and young" we should have allowed the slide to continue. Bollocks. He's missing the point that Laudrup was sacked without being given nearly so much time as Monk to sort out the problems. I'm sorry but these people are paid huge sums of money that most of us could only dream of. Like many of us if you don't get results you pay with your job - but managers usually end up multi-millionaires. Little sympathy from me I'm afraid.

I'm also tired of the "look how far they've come" line. It's now positively nauseating. As if because of that we have to be satisfied with where we are. We are an established Prem Club but journos always seem to forget it.

"Very weak article rehashing the worst tabloid speculation. Here's another way of looking at the story.


On 21 October following a run of bad results it was reported that Monk has been asked to accept an experienced assistant. He apparently declined. On 10 November following a dire performance against Norwich and continued decline in the it was reported that the offer was repeated and again declined. After a dead cat bounce against Liverpool, Monk was asked to leave on 9 December following a lifeless 3-0 drubbing by Leicester. This does not seem to me to be a manager being hung out to dry by a heartless board, it seems like the actions of directors who saw that Monk was struggling and offered him appropriate support, which he apparently spurned.


Monk left the club along with the three senior coaches, leaving the coaching team desperately thin. Swans chairman Huw Jenkins and fellow director Martin Morgan flew to South America a few days later reportedly to interview two of the most admired managers in the business - Bielsa and Sampaoli. A few days after that (c18 December) the highly respected Guidolin began preparing for his new role with the Swans (according to an interview he gave this week to an Italian newspaper). Far from desperate casting about for a new manager, this looks like excellent due diligence and admirable ambition.


Curtis - a great and loyal servant of the club - was appointed caretaker manager while the search for a permanent manager continued. He was confirmed in post until the end of the season earlier this month. He has made it clear he does not want the job permanently and will happily stand aside if a better candidate is found. Guidolin's appointment gives Curtis much-needed support (given the loss of the senior coaches) while protecting Guidolin (who has a history of stress problems) from the strain he'd experience if he walked straight into the manager's role. Again, I find it hard to fault this.


Finally, I know no Swansea supporters who are sorry to see Shelvey go (only ones who wish he hadn't gone to a relegation rival). I have seen no evidence to show that the rumours about Ayew and others wanting away are anything more than that.


So to recap - they bent over backwards to support Monk, they have a smart and ambitious succession plan in place and they got rid of a player who frustrated more than he delighted. What's left?"



"Ha. Swansea s rise was on the back of decisions that the football cognescenti said couldn't be done successfully. Well they did it. Despite that, the general view was that doom was only around the corner. Ironically at the point that the general view was coming round to 'ok they'll survive safely, boringly,mid-table without drama', doom heaved over the horizon.


Monks appointment was the result of a long held wish to bring on someone from within who understood what the club was about. Turns out he hadn't learned or understand a thing about the club. He'd learned nothing about the success of the style of play and set about changing both it and the players that made it successful. Under his stewardship, yes the highest points, but yes a yawning boring negative style took its place. Eventually the players lost belief and Monk paid with his job. For many, Huw Jenkins was too patient and held on too long before making changes. It may prove to have been too late but Alan Curtis was exactly the right man to restore some pride and belief, but he didn't want the job permanently and someone was needed to take the play forward. Turns out a lot of people that Swansea would like, didn't want to test their abilities at the bottom of the table.


Shelvey was a square peg in restoring the Swansea style (he couldn't play it and he could't learn) and had to go. They have appointed a respected coach who is aware of who Swansea are and how they play. He's unlikely to sell the style down the river like Monk.


So it will be an interesting 6 months ahead to see how the next chapter turns out. I'd put money on them being a good footballing side again."

The truth is that he spent the season replacing our attractive, attacking, passing football with the kind of dour, direct percentage play that Allardyce or Pulis would have been proud of. Last season was dull. This season has been shambolic, with defensive lapses allied to excruciatingly slow build up play that's made some useful attacking players look hapless.


I don't know whether it was arrogance or stupidity that made Huw Jenkins think he could appoint a manager who'd never even coached a kids team and get away with it, but the appointment of Guidolin would suggest that he's learned that lesson. Swans fans are hoping that the price for Jenkins's education isn't our Premier League status."
