Anyone see that Rooney goal? Nice form pre-season.

Nanis finish oozed class. Rooney is adjusting well to the scholes role...

Nani oozes class that is why the goal oozed class. Rooney is not playing in the Scholes role.

Not yet, but if we don't sign anyone I think he might end up there :/ with a slight change in formation or styly probably.

He didnt play there, but when he dropped back into the midflied to get the ball, some of his passes were very scholes like.

I too thought Rooney's passing was bordering on incredible tonight. I don't want to see him play that deep though. I would prefer him to play a "free" role where he can drop deep but isn't expected to for long periods do so as part of his role. He is far too much of a goal threat to play predominantly in midfield imo.

I don't ever want to see Wayne in a midfield role. Fitting square pegs in circle holes come to mind...

I agree, but not because he wouldn't do a job there. If he was played in a midfield role he would be our best midfielder. But his best posotion is definitely behind the striker in a free role. We need someone to be playing the passes rooney was making TO rooney. Only Messi can cross field pass to himself.

Rooney did nothing he hasn't done before in a United shirt. Just because he drops deep, doesn't mean he's playing in the Scholes role.

The first half showed quite a lot if I'm honest. Cleverley isn't ready to be a central midfielder...yet. And that Diouf could have a United career. I thought he and Welbeck linked up well and with Berbatov as well. I was impressed with the latter two with their versitility, playing out wide and their ability on the ball.

I liked the way that Jones or Smalling pushed up beyond the halfway line just to act as another midfielder so that was impressive. Apart from their goal, the defence did okay. Another thing is that our defence playing infront of de Gea needs to be ready to get on the ball as soon as the keeper has the ball, his distribution looks better than van der Sar's already (something the latter didn't do well, his accuracy generally wasn't brilliant) and looked to play the ball out quickly.

Obertan looked like he has spent alot of time in the gym but he came inside a lot from the right which suggest to me that he should play on the left, he is ridiculously quick, would like to see him against Valencia in a foot race but he doesn't use his pace often enough. But he just needs to do the basics right, but most of our attacking players in the first half were too quick to play a fancy ball or flick. Sometimes they came off, with Welbeck especially, but it's hard to blame them as we seemed to get in behind their defence easily at times.

Berbatov's finishing was poor but plenty of others had chances but failed to even make the keeper work!

All in all, with the heat and the opposition, it was just what was needed- a good test and we had to work hard so credit to the Chicago Fire for that.

Exactly. Who needs to spend £35m on Wesley Sneijder when we have a better player to fill that role at the club.

De Gea made some fantastic saves apparently, or are the media exaggerating?

He made a very good save with his foot, and another excellent low save to touch a shot off the post, apart from that he was just pretty solid with good distribution. One of the major things I was watching for was his communication and he seemed to be constantly talking to the defense which I was very happy about considering he is a new player and still very young.

it is to say he only speaks Spanish :p but apparently he's been working on key phrases. For a goalkeeper, i don't mean I have blue eyes like they teach you at school which has no relevance in life whatsoever. Things like 'OUT' 'DAVIDS' 'COVER' 'SORRY NEMANJA' etc.

I thought Welbeck had an excellent game, some of his touches and his general play were very good and he seemed to link with Berbatov well, Berb should of tucked one away in the first half after a great piece of play by Welbeck to turn the defenders with one touch then play a nice through ball.

Around the 1min mark in this video is the Welbeck moment I mentioned.

Ok. I thought he meant that he was talking in English to the defense.

Great bit of skill and the through ball was immense, eye of a needle stuff.
