Bit random but having a chat on Mackem board about the most difficult achievement as an indvidual in sport. We've mainly narrowed it down to 147 break in snooker or a 9 dart finish (I personally think 9darter) Just wondering is there any other obvious ones that any can think of on here?

Pitching a perfect game (no hits, no walks for getting all 27 outs) in baseball is more difficult than those two

This is when a single pitcher gets all 27 outs (9 innings, 3 outs per inning) without giving up a base runner, either through a hit or a walk. This is very very rarely done. More common is a "no hitter" when a pitcher gives up a walk or two but surrenders no hits.

That's one thing I'll never understand in baseball - they have their best batter on the plate, so we'll throw the ball away and he can walk to the first base. That way we don't risk him hitting it out of the ground - but we don't have a chance of getting him out either. Imagine we did that in cricket - "Here comes Gary Sobers ..... Oh they've allowed him to get 30 runs free and go off without hitting the ball ......" :emoticon-0105-wink:

Getting around an 18 hole golf course and scoring at least one under for every hole.

Or in my case, getting around a golf course and scoring, on average, at least one OVER for every hole :emoticon-0100-smile

Really? There have been 23 perfect games in the entire history of MLB. That is 23 in 135 years.

Got to admit I know nothing about rounders (baseball) :emoticon-0110-tongu but to achieve a 147 or a 9 darter is not to be sneezed at and is only achieved by the very very best.

Actually, based on my last few rounds, I'd be very happy to be going round in an average of 2 shots over per hole .............. Managed a stupendous round of 121 today with an uncanny ability to put the ball in any water which happened to be around. Not yet in bandit territory, unfortunately :emoticon-0105-wink:

I agree with that but trust me (and the stats back me up) pitching a perfect game is much rarer than a 147 or a 9 darter.

I must confess to have been to 4 baseball games in my life (Yankees, Mets, Rockies and Cubs) and found it - a) dreadfully boring at first - until someone started explaining the rudiments of the strategy to me and b) rather fascinating after that. There's no doubting the abilities of these guys - they play a stupendous amount of games in a season and quite how a pitcher manages to pitch for so many innings without doing his arm in is quite an achievement.
Think I'm with Tom on this one - 147 and 9 darters are relatively common in the sport - a perfect close-out by a pitcher is an incredible feat.

Mind you - we could say that taking 10 wickets in a test innings is right up there - as is 20 in a test match (don't think that has ever been done - I believe 19 by "Gentleman" Jim Laker - us "gents" need to stick together :emoticon-0105-wink: - is the highest). I'd say that's more difficult than 147 and a 9 darter too .........
