They have used Dobermans in the police and army before, there are still some in the army actually, but theyd be used more for protection or guarding than actually on the front line.

You obviously don't understand what the Doberman was bred to do, it was bred to protect and guard it's owners. It wasn't bred to give chase to random criminals, the only time Dobermans will attack is if their owner or the house they are guarding is under threat.

Shephards may make better police dogs, but as a guard dog or a protection dog the Doberman is superior as its a far more territorial breed. They are also far more loyal to their owners which makes them very clingy dogs, my one rarely leaves my side when I walk him, this is why they make better personal protection dogs, where as a Shephard likes to go off exploring on its own, and may not always be where it needs to be if it's guarding something or protecting someone without being reminded.

Dont forget the man who created the Doberman actually used German Shepards as one of the many breeds he used to create them, as he wanted to create the ultimate protection dog. So if the German Shephard was so smart and brilliant at everything then why would he feel the need to create the Doberman?

The truth is both dogs have slightly different strengths, and can be used for different purposes.

I didn't say German Shephards where stupid dogs either, what I said was that Dobermans where smarter. Both breeds are smart, but I think the Doberman is exceptionally smart, and the smartest dog I've come across. A friend of mine used to have a girl Shephard and it was pretty smart, but I never found it as clever as any Doberman I've known:biggrin:

Get a Parsons Russell Terrier or a Jack Russell or **** off*.

*No good as guard dogs though. We have visitors park on the drive, knock on the door, come into the house and walk in to the lounge, only then do the dogs decide to wake up and have a woof. "Intruder detected in the lounge".

I used to be a postman. Bitten three times by assorted mutts, chased up the ****ing road when dying of a hangover. Worst was this german shepherd whose owner was even more aggressive than the dog. I used to rattle the garden gate to flush the ****er out; if I heard it barking inside the house, it was safe to approach the front door; until one day when the doors on the latch, swings open and there's the slavering beast looking up at me. Broke all records getting to the fence but the thing bit my arse just as I jumped the gate. Then Psycho - that was the ****ing owners knickname, seriously - comes storming out the house thinking he's being burgled and ready to take on all comers. Bad day at the ****ing office.

The test of quality, would you listen to a whole album of similar "songs" for an hour or more? They are just couplets repeated over and over. No musical construction whatsoever. Can you imagine the entire Household division crossing Horse guards parade to that nonsense?!

A march has a dominant key, which usually modulates from major to minor, or vice versa. It has 16 or 32 bar strains with counter melodies, (usually played by the Euphonium in British military bands) when the strain is repeated. There is a Trio or bridge, where a new more lighter melody is played, before dc back to the beginning with an optional coda to fin.

Your choice has none of these merits and I discard it utterly.

Well if the American Kennel Club say it then it must be true <doh>

I used to own a Golden Retriever, which is listed number 4, a spot ahead of Dobermans, and whilst my retriever was a great pet, he was knowhere near as trainable as my Doberman. If he seen a cat or a squirrel off the lead he'd be off. So couldn't walk him near roads or anything like that. My Doberman from the age of 9 months ignored everything and just walked by my side anywhere.

I also didn't say German Shephards don't do as they are told, I said they don't make as good a guard dogs as Dobermans, as they are high energy dogs that like to wander off and explore. If you call them yes they'll come back, but you can't keep calling them every 5 mins.

A Doberman is a lower energy dog, who is a lot more territorial, so they will guard whatever they see as their land or property. They also cling to their owners when you take them anywhere, this is a well known trait in them, this is why they are the best personal protection dogs too.

A Doberman was specifically bred to guard and protect this is why they are better at it, where as a German Shephard was bred to heard sheep.

I can assure you now that a Doberman would be a far more fearsome opponent for an intruder than any German Shephard would. It really isn't a contest in that department:biggrin:

And while we're at it, a Dobber man doesn't malt all round the house?

Do Alsatians drink scotch, maybe that's what makes them bite people, half a bottle of chivas regal every night?
