Peoples thoughts? Thought I'd create a thread as Spanish has mentioned it quite a bit on the Derby thread. What is more important to people? Win at all costs, perhaps play horrible footy, compete for the 5050s, annoy the hell out of the opposition, probably have 40% of the ball? OR - ball on the deck every game, 60% ball, triangles, movement, however the results may be more mixed? In an ideal world we want results while being entertained and playing nice stuff, but what camp are you?
You talk percentages Westy and the problem is the vast percentage of our hoofed clearances/long throws come straight back at us putting the defence under ever increasing pressure. It really isn't rocket science and I can't understand why Mick and Terry persist with it.
Totally agree with that Bigal. The hoof up field does end up with the ball coming back at us much quicker than it really should.
It's all about performance and effort If we give everything and play good football and lose, I can live with that, but this negative hoofball is what hurts the most Sadly MM don't like free flowing creative football because he don't know what that is I truly believe that if we had the same players under another manager we would be a better team and playing better football The problem at Portman road is the manager not the players
Let me ask the MM supporters on here, can you with hand on heart ever see Mick playing the 100 miles an hour, in your face attacking football that Leicester is delighting us all with And let's not forget the majority of Leicester's star players came from the lower divisions so it's not all about money It's all about the manager
No yorkie, but I can see Mick getting us promoted. A different manager could have us play better football with our current squad but you could say that about many clubs.
Pretty much, but I'm also careful what I wish for and whilst we are challenging for top six then the style of football kind of comes second. I would rather we hoofed ourselves into the play offs than play pretty football and finish seventh. Like I said before, it's easy for me to say because I'm not attending matches and spending time and money. I do get up at 06:35am every saturday to tune in though, regardless how tired I am.
And whilst I think about it, I prefer talking about how we are near the top of the table with a team of freebies than if we were (theoretically) discussing how we play fabulous football but can't get a result because teams park the bus on us, for instance. If only we could marry the two together everyone would be happy. There are many teams that pass the ball better than us, MK dons for instance, but it's not got them in our position.
Ain't that the truth mate. I bet there are MK fans who are happy with the way they play but there will also be those that would like to see a scrappy win just to get three points. I'd much rather be in our position.
Yeah I would much rather watch us play hoofball at home and still lose! On the bright side, we are due a hoofball home win, so you can all wet yourselves with excitement again soon!
Sorry but it has become oh so dull these days, the club, the players, the management and the fans. Everyone from the bottom to the top seems happy with dull football as long as we get into the top ten. There is no drive these days and it annoys the hell out of me!
At the moment, for me personally, it's all abut the results. This is purely (and only) because I don't go to many games at all, I don't spend hours travelling, and hundreds of pounds each year to support our club, therefore for me, as I don't witness the boring football we play, I'm only interested in the end game, which hopefully is three points and promotion. I understand completely where Spanish is coming from, but I don't get how it matters to him how we win, as I'm assuming he doesn't see many of the games (other than the handful that are on TV). Season ticket holders, and regular supporters on the other hand have a right to be "entertained". Playing hoofball (as it's now being labelled) can only get you so far. If a team is promoted playing that style, then sure as hell they'll need to change their style asap to live in the premiership. The only recent team to possibly do it, is Palace, but they have adapted quickly, and now play an attacking brand of football (like Watford do, like Leicester now do) No club has survived for long periods in the top flight playing hoofball, so the sooner we start changing our style, and getting used to playing that way, the better it will serve us in the long run, with hopefully a promotion, and being established in the premiership. Look at the last nine clubs to get promoted: Bournemouth, Watford, Norwich, Leicester, Burnley, QPR, Cardiff, Hull and Palace. Out of all those teams, probably Burnley are the only club to play a long ball kinda game (not too sure about Cardiff), and they only managed a season in the top flight. Every other club play an attacking, possession game, which has served most of them well in the top flight. The point im trying to make is, if, as a club, you have ambitions of playing in the premiership, and staying there, then long ball game will not serve you well. Most other clubs are too good to let that trouble them. Possession, attacking football is the way to play, so, the sooner we start to play that, then the better it will be for us longer term.
" Pretty much, but I'm also careful what I wish for and whilst we are challenging for top six then the style of football kind of comes second. " Same position as you. Would love us to play the Royle way ( started to get really into town in 99 but first games I went to live were under Royle ). As a player, I play CM. I HATE the defence whacking it over my head, I want the ball on the deck. Just pass it to feet, let the ball do the work, right? Perhaps so, however, like or hate our style of play it picks up points. We're 6th at the minute, having a decent season. We can mix it up more than last year also. The main reason I ask this is people get on a high horse at how the game should be played. Triangles etc. Correct me if I'm wrong ( you won't be able to ) but surely the objective of any style of play in footy, is to WIN? Sure, it may be ugly, it may not be fun, but providing you do, you've set out and achieved what you set out to. Pulis is getting pelters at WBA - but with that crack of **** squad them and Villa should probably swap places. " You talk percentages Westy and the problem is the vast percentage of our hoofed clearances/long throws come straight back at us putting the defence under ever increasing pressure. It really isn't rocket science and I can't understand why Mick and Terry persist with it. " Probably because Mick doesn't want sloppiness in areas where it will hurt us if we cock up. We don't have any ballers in the backline, we move it forward as quick as possible, win the 5050s and play in the final third. Like the style or not, half season gone we're in the play offs. I think there's more to come from this lot - and that's probably what frustrates many. Fraser/ Sears etc. We have technical ability this time. I can tell a lot of people on this forum do not attend away games as the general consensus from most, is Mick is doing a fine job. We really get behind him on away days. " The point im trying to make is, if, as a club, you have ambitions of playing in the premiership, and staying there, then long ball game will not serve you well. " I'll worry about that bridge when we get to it. Didn't seem to serve Stoke too badly...........
Even they have adapted somewhat, with the likes of Bojan and Shaqiri (and even Walters). To survive in any league, you need to adapt, and mix it up a bit when things aren't going to plan. We only have a plan A, and that will be our downfall. Bigger and better teams will know how to play against us.
" To survive in any league, you need to adapt " Yes but they got there by any means then stayed up playing as you called it a non successful style and have now got Shaqiri/ Bojan/ Afellay and Arnaoutovic ( spelling ) who is to say if we got there we wouldn't do the same? We need to get out of here for that to be of any interest!
