The second goal was pretty much on Soares. Gazzaniga didn't exactly make the best play but never had much of a chance.
Soccer Saturday reckoned the defense switched off for the second one because they were appealing for offside. Not that you should just switch off if you think it might be offside, but at least is slightly more encouraging than everyone just switching off for no real reason/generally having an awful time of it. That said, not watching the game, so can't verify the veracity of the report! How's Gazzaniga doing? Okay, despite the scoreline?
No they don't as to get goals those playing well moments need to be sustained. Then goals tend to come. Trouble is, we can't keep it up at the moment for long enough.
I have said it before and will repeat too many low cost copies of lost players. Now we know why Poch left!
We may not have conceded like that in a long time but the defence this season has consistently looked much less secure than last season. As our attacking players remain inconsistent and we lack depth we're becoming a mediocre side.
Players shouldn't be 1v1 with our centre backs and both goals players were running straight at Van Dijk. The problem is in the midfield - Wanyana isn't on form and Clasie is a passenger, he's been walking for the past 15 minutes. The biggest problem for the second goal was because Bertrand was covering for Clasie in midfield.
Pathetic display by our defence...none of them covering themselves in glory to put it politely Poor young Gazza has no chance with these clowns in front of him
Thought VVD was actually playing really well until that goal. But what a horrible tackle. There wasn't any support all he had to do was stand there and let the player and ball come to him instead taking a wild kick at it.
I thought both Clasie and Vic have been two of our better players today. You can't just blame them. The first goal was down to Davis giving the ball away cheaply at the start and Clasie was about the only player who made a decent effort to try and rectify that.
To get goals you need to create chances. At the moment even our "good spells"are literally just us in the other teams half, around the box. Look at that Harry Kane goal when was the last time you saw a player in a Saints shirt that clean through on goal? I don't think I'm exaggerating to say I don't think I've seen us have a chance like that for a loooooooong time
Agreed. But Virgil at fault for both goals. First he did some weird air shot letting Kane through, then he backed off Walker and allowed him to cross.
I honestly don't know. I think Van Dijk personally. He's gifted two tap ins recently and now done that (and Fonte's the captain). That was utterly shocking. At least Fonte took a man out the game by clattering Ali. In Van Dijk's position I'm always backing off, trying to contain Kane and slow him down. It gives the defence a chance to recover. It gives me a chance to potentially tackle Kane and also gives Gazzaniga more of a chance as if Kane gets a shot off then it's under pressure..I'd be hoping for players to get back and try to get a block in or dive in just as Kane got to the box. Shocking from VVD, a real rash and basic error again. But the whole defence fell to tatters! A laughable goal to concede! Then another straight after! We mustn't forget Bertrand is exposing VVD all the time and it's as if he's panicking as a result. For me Yoshida deserves a go at centre back in a back four. Yoshida has only had chances playing out of position and at centre back in a three. He tended to be solid in a back four when he actually had chances there. VVD is a monster in the air and on set pieces, but defensively he's lost the plot lately.
Jeeze guys, that wasn't "****e all round" and "terrible performance" - it was actually encouraging but undermined by individual errors and momentary sloppiness which has killed confidence. It's been that way much of the season.
We're playing with a fairly high line so there needs to be pressure on the ball or they have a free pick of balls to the striker. Bertrand is a fairly instinctive player, so I don't think he was too much at fault when there was such a big gap in the midfield.
