A man has been stabbed to death in a Poundland store in Oxfordshire.

Officers were called to the shop in Bury Street, Abingdon, at about 11:20 GMT, Thames Valley Police said. A 36-year-old man from the Abingdon area has been arrested.

Paramedics said the victim died from his injuries at the scene and a second man nearby suffered a minor injury to his thumb.

Police said officers were investigating whether the two were connected.

Kash works at a nearby Spar shop and said after the stabbing a man, who was known to locals in the area, tried to push his way into the store.

He said: "He approached with two knives in his hands and he tried to enter. He said 'I just want to shake your hand' and we held the door closed.

"Then a policewoman caught up with him and Tasered him."

Supt Rory Freeman said: "Members of the public will understandably be shocked and upset by this incident today, which has happened in a very public place.

"At this stage, this is not being treated as a terrorist incident."

On Twitter, Alf Merkin wrote: "The fact my family was here while this was happening is just scary."

Poundland chief executive Jim McCarthy said he was "shocked" that one of the company's customers had been killed.

He said: "Our sympathy and thoughts centre on the family of the deceased and of course with other customers and colleagues who were in the store at the time of this terrible incident."

Poundland is closed, the area has been cordoned off and officers remain at the scene.

I'll carry something when I'm in town, I doubt it'll be a blade.

"after the stabbing a man, who was known to locals in the area,"

Question marks there. Sounds like like something behind the scenes.

Obviously more details needed but not convinced it`s random.

    <laugh>

I have already heard a couple of people talking along the same lines..

It's going to be interesting the first time an attack is stopped by a member of the public taking the law into their own hands and seriously injure or even kill a terrorist. It will happen one day and the public reaction will be ferocious if that person is charged (which they will be)

This type of attack is almost impossible to stop but do we really want to go down the route of arming ourselves?

Admittedly if anybody ever broke into my house I would have no qualms whatsoever about kicking someone to death but is this a targeted attack? Did the person have Mental Health issues?

I haven't seen the news yet so these are just my initial thoughts on reading the post.

Stabbingdon (as I like to call it) has had quite a few issues recently regarding murders. It's quite a posh little area too!

Doubtless when it all settles down we can claim it was terrorist if it is non-christian or nut case if it is christian, either way human race involved with sharp objects.

We Brits need to get our stoicism back ir we will become USAville.

Yet again the press felt the need to use the word terrorist.

    Pathetic.

Easy targets mate. I've had my fill on this topic however I will point out Thames Valley Police have said they are not treating this as a terrorist attack.

So the press jumped the gun (so to speak) yet again.

Scare tactics. Like i spoke about before. Keep the population in fear. Your keep them under control.
