We seem far better suited to playing away from home so being drawn to play Southampton at their place could be a blessing in disguise! Can't see either Henderson or Sturridge starting (Maybe come on on the 60/65th minute mark!) and we'll probably make some changes. Just a shame changes can't be made at full-back as Clyne & Moreno could do with a rest soon. 3-1 Liverpool. #positivity
Maybe I am somewhat detatched from the game in England right now, living here in Mallorca but it seems strange that you LFC supporters who won so much in 60s, 70s and 80s and have had some success in cup competitions (you have won more trophies than Arsenal in the past decade) would be delighted to win such a crap cup. The same applies to Southampton fans as well. Is there another country in Europe that has two cup tournaments? I think we overvalue the importance of this competition. To my mind there should be no place in Europe for the winners. It should go to the highest placed teams outside those who qualify for the CL.
As a footballing fan and taking a neutral aspect, the two teams I would like to see in the final of this competition are Everton and Stoke, for their traditions, fan base and a chance to win some silverware. Liverpool have more serious trophies to target (Europa) and Top 4 or maybe more, likewise City while some fans of my club imagine winning silverware is part of our genetic makeup. We are a mid-table PL team that has the occasional appearance in the top half of the division given the club's profile and fan base.
Don't think you'll find a Liverpool wanting us to win the LC because it offers a EL spot. We want CL football so fourth or a EL win would be preferable. However, winning any legitimate trophy is a good thing.
I'm never becoming a snob and looking down my nose at certain competitions, the LC is something that we can win and I want us to win it. I'm never bouncing around and celebrating 4th but it'll be party time if we win the LC. Yes it's the lesser of the cups and if we get knocked out I'll get over it pretty quickly but I want success and to win things so it's a priority.
But you can dream and the unexpected sometimes happens, my perspective is going to be different with the success we've had but I'd like to think that I watch football for the ups and downs and I enjoy the ride. I'll always dream that we'll be right at the top again it may or may not happen but I'll be there regardless.
What a load of bollocks saying you can't understand why Saints fans want to win it. We've won ONE major trophy in our history, ONE. And that was nearly 40 years ago so a large chunk of fan base don't remember this. **** sake this is the problem with modern football - people would rather finish top6/8 than win a trophy. Ridiculous, give me a cup win over a decent league position any day of the week. Sort of understandable for the bigger clubs fans who have seen their team win trophies but for a Saints fan to say the same is quite frankly ridiculous in my view.
Why would we NOT want to win it?? As fans surely we want our teams to win everything they can don't we? Is it our number one priority at the start of the season? Obviously not, at the start of the season it ranks as the least important but for tonight it's the priority. If we lose it won't keep me from sleeping but if we win I'll be more than happy. I know I'd rather have our name on it than anyone else's, I'd rather have a day out at Wembley than not have one. I also know winning trophies can breed confidence. If we were to win the LC in Feb it may well have a positive impact on the rest of the season (and it'll look good for the new manager). Win-win I reckon.
I did think this too but didn't feel it was right for me to say. Thought it might be a bit patronising if I said it so glad you did
I'd rather we get City....smash them again ( ) then another derby final...we ain't had one for too long Tough game tonight though, I have a lot of respect for Southampton and how they go about things these days. Should be a tight one....
I'd settle for that mate I agree about tonight, I wouldn't want to call it. So I'll sit and enjoy watching it, safe in the knowledge that we're already in the hat for once. Should be a good game, looking forward to it tbh.
