Gotta say i'm surprised by what Chambo has said. I have seen the articles with headlines like 'Chambairlin looks for move' etc but I though it was just old news without Oxo actually making a comment but after reading the echo article it seems as though he does want to go. Surely it's time for Cortese and Adkins to cash in?! We could get some top quality Championship players for the money we've supposedly been offered.
Without doubt Cortese is right on the punishments of Chamberlain and Puncheon. The fact of the matter is, they both signed contracts and when you sign a contract you are committed to the football club until it expires or are told otherwise. There is far too much player power these days. You can't just pick and choose who you want to play for. Chamberlain needs to show more respect to Southampton and honour his contract until told otherwise. As for Puncheon, the more I hear of him, the less I like. The fact that he refused to play at Tranmere in January was a disgrace and he is now paying the price of it.
If it is all true, which I don't doubt for a minute, the first thing Oxo should do is apologise to the rest of the team for rocking the boat. Stupid Boy.
If Alex wants to leave then we really should just cash in for something around the £10m mark and buy some championship established players instead. It will be a shame, and he shows a lot of potential to make it big, but it doesn't seem worth hanging on to him at the end of the day. A year in the championship would do his career good, mind. Maybe we can sell him and get him back on loan for a year?
His dad is his agent isnt he? Alex is a good lad, it said in the interview i think that he takes guidance and talks alot to his dad about his career. It is clear that his dad has told him to do this interview, what do you expect from a dirty skate?
Completely disagree with this article. Not to fine him would mean bending the rules to allow our best (most value) players get away with things that others can't. Hardly a good way to motivate a team. He broke the rules and has to be punished in the same way any of his team-mates would have. It's a real shame he's done this, but I guess it indicates that we're not playing ball with Arsenal & Co if his agent is advising him to do daft things like this to engineer the move.
Why does the title say Southampton are wrong to fine him? Most people in here are agreeing that he should be fined, and the original post says nothing.
Players get fined all the time for various things from turning up late, to not looking after their boots to doing unauthorised interviews to a whole host of things, some of them trivial as far as we would see, but in keeping with team morale. I think in the past, the club captain (Kelv Davis) set up the list of fines around training ground and matchdays and set the amounts. I'm sure the club has a similar list for what see as violations to the contract the player has signed in good faith. Now, perhaps Chamberlain is young enough to be naive about not asking permission before doing newspaper interviews... or he knew full well and did it regardless, probably after prompting from his agent and/or father. He probably didn't get fined much, I very much doubt it was on a scale of a weeks wages or anything like that. But as I said earlier, the Agent is using it as another way to gain publicity for his client and paint Saints/Cortese as the bad guy... something of course the Echo would lap up.
Probably not too upset about fine, but having to burrow under the floor every time he sees Nicola approach must be tiring. At 17, he will not know how to handle this, especially as he seems a cheerful lad.
We are forgetting something are we not........Chamberlain was happy to sign a three year deal with us not yet a year ago. When he was not in the spotlight. In that deal it would have been made very plain as to his responsibilities to himself the club and the fans. It would also have been pointed out about media responsibilities and consequences of talking to them with out guidance and permission. He may be a star in the making but he has to learn that rules are there to be adhered to. None of us have the luxury of picking and choosing which rules we will obey!!!
Lets hope he stays. Fine or no fine, lets hope he is happy to stay as we need him next season he is one of the exciting players we need playing for us.
Agree with CBK - we don't know all the facts behind the interview - his father is his agent and he has made no secret that he want's to cash in now on his son's success. The Echo article like all their articles are tainted with malice.. again treat this with caution...
I fear this is the beginning of the end of Chambo's tenure with Southampton, glad we have kept Lallana but I really hoped that Chamberlain would stay as well and both of them would be role models for other prospects we have in the youth system and they would want to stay. Once we have EPL status hopefully we will be able to keep these players, although I fear that there will always be that "next step" whether it is Premier League football or European Football I don't know. Personally I think Chambo is the victim of his father being a journey man and living his dreams through his son. I'm not saying it is a bad thing for Chambo but it is for us as Saints fans. On to the next big thing I suppose - hopefully Ward-Prowse, Martin and Jack Stephens will start knocking on the first team door...
You cross Cortese, you get punished. God, I love this man more and more by the day! If Chamberlain wants to leave, he can leave. And I wouldn't be surprised if we achieve success sooner than he does!
The only way to stop or delay the talented youngsters leaving is to get promoted asap and have a group of decent youngsters come up to the first team together. Nothing special individually but work well as a team to cement our PL status and then build from there.
He would be an idiot to leave. One more year then I don't care if he sods off, I just don't want to see him end up like Walcott. No where near his potential.
âI guess seeing what has happened with Theo and Gareth (Bale) inspires me,â reflected Chamberlain. âAlthough they didnât jump straight into the first team when they moved, theyâve pushed on to better things. So I take confidence from that." --------- What an ungrateful wretch this child is, what an amateur is father seems to be, what a greedy, greedy, individual his agent undoubtedly is. Why don't this unholy trinity all push off to 'better' things. Irritating sh1ts..........
