Newcastle new boy Mehdi Abeid is setting his sights on holding down a regular first-team role at Newcastle.

The 18-year-old Frenchman penned a contract with the Magpies in June after impressing during a trial spell.

He was expected to form part of the club's reserve set-up in 2011/12, allowing him to find his feet in English football and fine-tune his game under the guidance of second string coach Peter Beardsley.

He has, however, caught the eye during his short time at the club and was promoted to the senior set-up for Newcastle's pre-season programme.

With Alan Pardew prepared to give him every opportunity to prove his worth, Abeid believes he is capable of forcing his way into the Magpies' Premier League plans.

"There are some great players in this team and I must battle to get past them," the promising midfielder told the Northern Echo.

"I want to progress here and it's good for my education in football.

"I'm very happy to be playing for Newcastle now. I hope I can do well for the club this season and I'm looking forward to the challenge of being a Newcastle player."

Abeid admits the presence of fellow French speakers Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba has helped him to adjust to life on Tyneside, and he is now setting his sights on competing for a starting berth alongside them this season.

He added: "I heard some good things about Newcastle from when I was in France.

"They're a big club on the way up. Every young player would like this opportunity and I feel very fortunate to have it.

"Hatem and Demba have helped me a lot already. It's good to have them around while I settle in.

"It's a big challenge for me and I hope to play in a lot of games this season in the first-team."

    Good attitude to have.

Why didn't he mention Cabaye as well?

Not so sure about not being up to standard, I was under the impression he just let his own contract run down. Who knows though? :p

They got relegated and he got a better offer with us, so we poached him, yeah.
