Isn't half of their pitch in England and half in Wales? Something like that anyway (I'm not blaming the flooding on that although there could have been a leek at the Welsh end?) I hitchhiked to Chester with Guvnor666 to see City once when I was about 14!
I can't see the image for some reason, but I love the quirky nature of Carlisle's ground, where one stand starts a third of the way down the pitch, and finishes behind the end stand. Seemingly, they were going to move the pitch and the other stands, but ran out of money.
It's actually a vine, it shows their pitch under a foot of water (at least at one end), they're still planning on having it ready for a game tomorrow night apparently.
I thought it looked different Been to Carlisle to watch City too of course, but not hitchhiking....I did however travel with 4 of us in a Ford Ka !!!
I went on a steam drawn (2 engines) football special via the Settle to Carlisle Railway, also had my first Chinese restaurant meal in Carlisle; I think we lost 1-0, long time ago.
My old man always told me us and Carlisle had the best playing surface in the league. This was BP. Not sure how true it was, he used to lie a lot.
For years we were supposed to have had some of the best floodlights as well. Fans have to find something to feel proud when the team doesn't offer anything. Wasn't the South stand/Bunkers Hill something for a City fan to boast about for some reason?
Not sure about Carlisle Chaz but yes it was recognised that the BP was one of the best and due to Stan Combes, I have mentioned it before but it was rumoured that Spurs offered a transfer fee for Stan if he would go to White Hart Lane, thankfully he didn't. But I travelled to Carlisle years ago, 3 times, and I can't say I rated their pitch at the time in fact the ground was a sh*thole of a place.
All this was mostly due to Harold Needler donating £250,000 worth of Hoveringham Gravel share's, a fortune at the time, to Hull City and hence the spending spree on the ground and players. There was the South Stand built (Bunkers Hill) a 1st class gymnasium and training pitches built behind the stand, new floodlights and of course the nucleolus of a fantastic forward line Waggy, Ian Butler and Ken Houghton, pity the defence wasn't strengthened as well, only much later when it was too late.
