In at No.2... 2. Hull City (Boothferry Park) BOOTHFERRY PARK Opened 1946 Closed 2002 Record attendance 40,179 With many of the grounds in the Football League dating from the Victorian or Edwardian eras, when Boothferry Park opened in 1946 it stood out as a beacon of newness. Hull City fans certainly took to their new home, with 55,019 watching their FA Cup tie with Manchester United in 1948/49. For a while the ground even had the luxury of its own railway station: Boothferry Park Halt. And by 1963, it had also developed what became part of a staple pub-quiz question: six free-standing floodlights. In 2002, the Tigers left for the swish comforts of the KC Stadium, and Boothferry Park slowly rotted. Tenant supermarkets Kwik Save and Iceland closed in 2007, demolition began in 2008 and the floodlights finally went in 2011. There are now houses on the site. please log in to view this image please log in to view this image http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features...beloved-long-lost-grounds#3y0ImfsXphwPBXeh.99
In the article, it says the record attendance at Roker Park is 22,500. Surely that's wrong. Also, is it Tony Norman in goal for Sunderland in the first picture?
Piss poor lazy journalism apparently our record attendance at BP was 40.179 yet paragraph two refers to the 55,019 who attended our cup game with Man U in 1949 ! And yes they are only 53.000 out with regard to Sunderlands record gate.
I think the record attendances are all supposed to be league attendances, though it's still wrong as I believe ours was just shy of 50k against Wednesday. The Roker Park one is obviously miles out.
The 1949 attendance was at Anlaby Road. The replay versus Chelsea in 1966 at Bothferry Park had over 45,000. I've been in an official attendance of 41,442 (I think - 42,000 tickets were sold) at Boothferry Park for the cup game against Stoke. I can't remember the biggest league attendance.
I miss Boothferry Park of the 60's and 70's but Not what it became. When it went it was a relief. In fact Boothferry Park had become a dump. End of. Continue to R.I.P. Boothferry Park. However what is now on that land is a complete shambles and disgrace.
Highest league attendance - 04/02/1950 - Second Division (Old) - Sheffield Wednesday - Boothferry Park - 49,900
Totally agree with this, a ground where a night game really was special when you're 8 or 9 and it was half term....fantastic surface
100% true. Manchester Utd (Watney Cup) - Leicester City (league cup) just 2 of the highlights of 70's night games.
I thought we had 50,000 in for a home league game v Rotherham in either the 40s or 50s? Additionally, that this attendance was a 3rd Div record. Also, the terrace at Leeds Road was absolutely huge.
Here's all our highest attendance figures, home and away... 24/05/2008 Play-off Final Bristol City Wembley 86,703 01/11/2008 Premier League Manchester United Old Trafford 75,398 23/01/2010 Premier League Manchester United Old Trafford 73,933 07/04/1950 Second Division (Old) Tottenham Hotspur White Hart Lane 66,889 01/03/1930 FA Cup 6th Round Newcastle United St. James' Park 63,486 15/02/1930 FA Cup 5th Round Manchester City Maine Road 61,574 27/09/2008 Premier League Arsenal Emirates Stadium 60,037 19/12/2009 Premier League Arsenal Emirates Stadium 60,006 29/03/1907 Second Division (Old) Chelsea Stamford Bridge 60,000 07/10/1964 FA Cup 3rd Round Everton Goodison Park 56,613 17/03/2009 FA Cup 6th Round Arsenal Emirates Stadium 55,641 26/02/1949 FA Cup 6th Round Manchester United Boothferry Park 55,019 24/02/1954 FA Cup 5th Round Tottenham Hotspur White Hart Lane 52,936 24/09/1949 Second Division (Old) Sheffield Wednesday Hillsborough 52,403 29/01/1958 FA Cup 4th Round Sheffield Wednesday Hillsborough 51,834 13/09/2008 Premier League Newcastle United St. James' Park 50,242 27/01/1951 FA Cup 4th Round Rotherham United Boothferry Park 50,040 04/02/1950 Second Division (Old) Sheffield Wednesday Boothferry Park 49,900 25/12/1948 Third Division (North) Rotherham Utd Boothferry Park 49,655 18/03/1950 Second Division (Old) Leeds United Elland Road 49,465 19/02/1927 FA Cup 5th Round Wolverhampton Wanderers Molineux 48,948 27/12/1949 Second Division (Old) Brentford Boothferry Park 48,447 29/10/1949 Second Division (Old) Leeds United Boothferry Park 47,638 22/03/1930 FA Cup Semi Final Arsenal Elland Road 47,549
Its a few years old that list, the FA Cup final/semi final would be up there. As would two more games against Arsenal, Man U, Newcastle...etc
That explains why you are under the impression we got 49,000 in the Anlaby Road ground (a ground where the record was about 32,000) in 1949, which was 3 years after we had moved to Boothferry Park.
I'm quite envious of the older generation that got to see Boothferry Park in its heyday, as someone born in the late 80's my only experience of Boothferry Park was during the dark days when a poor team played in a crumbling stadium in front of small crowds, still loved every second of it though.
The highest attendance for a third tier game was 52,000 at Cardiff in Division 3 South. However we sold 55,000 tickets for a Boxing Day game in Division Three South against Rotherham in 1948 but due to a bus srike "only" just short of 50,000 turned up. Impressive when hardly anyone had a car. Doubt that many would walk to the game nowadays. Since the formation of 4 divisions we held the record for Division 3 for a number of years with the 40,000 against Millwall. This was beaten by Villa and is now about 48,000 for Sheff Wed v Sheff Utd game. The record for Division4 is Crystal Palace with 36,000.
