Have to say, that after we blew the Bale money I thought we had had our fill of expectarion and excitement for the next couple of decades.

The last couple of seasons, I didn't think in all honesty we were worth 5th place, had a number of lucky results, and looked nowhere near the quality of some other clubs in the league.

But things are on the up again.

We've got a young squad with real quality.

The defence looks the strongest its been in years, and we've got some exciting attacking talent.

And it should keep getting better.

For the first time for a few seasons now, I feel not only might we get top 4, but we might merit it, and potentially have even brighter things to come.

    Happy days.

I agree Rob if we were Man United the press would be hailing the next generation of superstars. I just hope we can get sufficient results to keep the squad together before the vultures start arriving.

Completely agree Rob, I've already said it a few times but I haven't been this excited about a Spurs team since Harry's side that had Bale, Modric and Rafa in the same side, what's better right now is that this current bunch has so much potential to push on as well.

The defence has been immense while Kane seems to be back on the goal hunt. We've been raving on in recent weeks about the likes of Dier and Alli for their performances and youthfulness yet most wouldn't be blamed if they'd temporarily forgotten about Bentaleb who's also an incredible talent in the centre of the pitch, then there's Pritchard too who's one of the most exciting attacking prospects in the country, Onomah is getting more involved just as Winks has been, Son and Chadli are both injured who are both deadly attacking outlets on their day and big players for our squad so when they're back things will only get better.

Not only do we have a very good young squad but we also have a very good young manager who's still learning and growing into the English management game.

It's a really good time to be a Spurs fan.

After a slow start you seem to be gathering momentum, a lot is down to Kane playing well (not just scoring) I would have concerns that if he was injured or not playing well again too many draws would creep in.

That the Academy setup has been consistently delivering players to the seniors over the
past 5 seasons (whether you rate said players or not) is something I am really pleased with.

The closest we have been to that IMHO has been the early 1980s, so long may it continue.

Yeah the squad is good no arguments but I feel that Kane is a focal point and without him you would struggle to finish teams.

Gonzo, mate, I'll give you the slight benefit of the doubt that this isn't one of your stealth wums!!

But you're right to an extent, if Kane gets injured we have no like for like replacement! Closest thing we have is Son, and he's injured.

I think the team would still function well without him, but the goal threat may not be the same.

Yeah I'm just joining in with the debate and agree that although there are parts of the squad that rival fans may argue on I'd agree that in general you have a young talented squad with some experience and that you should do well this season but as I say and you seem to agree, without Kane it could mean that too many games end up as draws. Fixing that would be a priority in Jan maybe.

I'm happy with a pretty large number of our players and it also appears that we've got a number of good prospects coming through the academy.
I still think that our squad needs some fine tuning in January though, even if we resort to loans.
I can see a few people being moved on, too.
Very important to pick out those who've got their heads screwed on properly, though.

One of the most positive things for me at the moment is that our current philosophy should make it easy to attract youth talent.
If you've got the ability and the right attitude, then you'll get your chance.
There aren't nearly enough clubs that appear to have that approach at the moment, unfortunately.

Are we discussing Kane the striker? Because he just woke up a few games ago.

Or are we discussing Kane the team player? In which case he is part of a collective and we have managed to finish teams off this season, without his goals..and his team play has been just as important, not more so, just as important as every other player. Had Son not been injured, we would have acquired more points, had Dier not been playing well, we would possibly have less. Had Our centre back pairing not been working as they are, we would be in bother. We have scored 19 goals in the league so far. Kane has 5 of them. Some other caaants have got the other 14.

I agree, this is an exciting squad, I made this point only last week on another thread that we have something very exciting happening at the club with our manager and youth squad, and not exciting in a Wenger way.

Few weeks back we had a thread "is Pochettino out of his depth"

Now, "most exciting squad in 3 years"

One week Lamela is a passenger, following week the new Bale.

Yes there is potential but nothing has been achieved yet and hopefully we won't be discussing painful derby defeats in the coming weeks.

    They are orthogonal matters.
The squad can be exciting, and Pochettino can still be out of his depth
    in coaching/managing them.

The squad can have the potential to be exciting, but without correct management the potential can't be fulfilled.

Currently both squad and management are mostly potential, whether that will be fulfilled can't be answered, yet.

Lamela is no Gareth Bale. Never has been, never will be. He's improved massively, but Bale comparisons are a joke!

We have some real talent now - Eriksen, Hugo and Harry (probably Son as well). There's some strong professionals - Vertonghen, Walker and Alderweireld but mainly we're about future promise. What Alli, Dier, Mason, Bentaleb, Pritchard, Davies, Lamela, Onomah achieve in the next few years will determine our future. I'm confident these young lads are going to achieve great things together. Ok. we can't match Klopp's 2 draws and a win with £300m of 'talent'(?). I thought that a spend of £100m should win you the league? Maybe that was another Red and we are re-writing history? Next year again eh?

I think there are a lot of exciting players in the squad. For me there remain question marks about some of the more established players talent-wise (Townsend, Dembele and yes Lamela still no matter his recent improvement) and of course the likes of Clint and Wimmer have a lot to prove but they're young and been here hardly any time so we'll wait and see. We have a lot of exciting talent though and a lot of it English and Academy-produced too which is good to see.

I worry a bit about the longevity of this group though. I honestly don't question Kane's commitment to the club, or that of any of the Academy boys actually, but looking at the likes of Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Lloris, Dier, Eriksen...don't get me wrong I don't think any of them would ever throw their toys out the pram they just don't seem the types (ok maybe Jan..), and I sense from them a genuine affection for the club and fans. But I could see them looking to move on if they continue to perform well and if Spurs don't hit the CL or a trophy within the next 2-3 years. They're very good players nearing their peak years and they must realistically have ambitions that Spurs may not necessarily be in a position to fulfil. Levy may well see $$ signs if a serious bidder comes offering big money and I think there may be only one outcome there unfortunately, as I feel the club's strategy right now is to pursue top 4 and trophies opportunistically as long as we can stay in touch with the top 4 in the PL until the stadium is done. Honestly, I think Levy would sell a big player if it helped us better finance the NDP and just muddle on through the football side until its all done in a few years.

That said if we can keep them all together (big IF I fear) and make the right additions (also quite a big IF) then we have something special in the long term, as long as Poch doesn't cock up too badly as he develops himself alongside the young players.
