Eating outside of London, when I'm in the UK, is akin to travelling back in time 15 years. The *****lian BBQ and Yo Sushi recommendations on this thread highlight the gulf, old bean. I do concede that I had great food and time at the Company Shed near Colchester when I was last in the country, although this was due to the quality of ingredients and a cheeky bottle of Sancerre or three. Eating in London is akin to paying the prices 15 years in the future though, for no better quality, assuming you're savvy enough to know where to eat and avoid any chains. Only a couple of weeks back in a London restaurant, a work mate ordered a Rocket side salad. 15 quid. It was literally just a handful of washed rocket. Not even any dressing. Someone else ordered some other salad stuff, and it came in a plant pot. Still growing. For 20 quid I don't expect to have to harvest my own food. If that's the future, you can shove it.
London is relatively cheap for me now, Happiness old bean. An equivalent meal with drinks costs around twice the amount where I live now unfortunately. Eating out in the midlands seems to be graded/rated on volume of food served for the price. ESSEX GULL
I don't mind paying more for a meal, but it has to be worth the extra mark up. 15 quid for a handful of rocket is taking the Michael.
Which restaurant was it, Happiness old bean? If the rocket salad was different from what the menu advertised, why didn't she send it back? ESSEX GULL
In fairness, it did just say Rocket Side Salad. I just had higher expectations for that sort of money. No idea on the name of the place, sorry, it was in the City. I realised that, despite working in London for some time at one point, if you removed all the words from a map of the place, I wouldn't be able to point at anything and name it. I get the train. On to the tube. Pop out of the tube. 5 min walk to office. Not a clue where I am. Sums London up for me that.
