So McClean's a tw*t and you gave him dogs all game: Fenian this, Irish that. Fair enough, he brought all that on himself. I've no problem with that.

But when he goes over and raises his fist at you at the end of the game all of a sudden you're losing the rag over it. So what? Why so fukking precious? Its like he's run over, pulled off his shirt and wiped his arse with the crest. Talk about an OTT reaction.

I think there's two sides to this argument. You're right in what you're saying - especially as he is a professional footballer - however, when you're subjected to abuse and mockery from fans that don't like you throughout a match and you give a little bit back, I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with that.

As humans, our emotions can get the better of us at times. That doesn't justify what he did nor what happened in the aftermath, but no amount of money in the world can stop you from reacting a certain way instinctively.

That said, there could be more to the McClean issue that I'm not familiar with.

My manager has had numerous disgusting chants directed at him by fans such as being a kiddy fiddler and songs about ****philia. Do you not think this can also incite behaviour and provocation too? It just seems to me that fans can say pretty much whatever they like, so long as it isn't a form of racism, and can get away with it. It's not entirely fair in that respect.

 

You should read up on his past behaviour... He's a horrible bastard and is in my opinion EVERYTHING that is wrong with the modern day footballer.

I agree.... Adam Johnson got barracked (rightly or wrongly) when on the pitch but as a professional footballer didn't feel the need to 'confront' the crowd ?

He's from Northern Ireland which is half full of lunatics, both loyalist and republican, but the stuff you lads are saying even on this thread is chucking the whole of Ireland in with those nutcases from the north. I haven't once mentioned anyone other than McClean and would not dream of typecasting a whole nation on the 'attitude' of one scumbag.
I'm all for passion at matches and have no problems with fans giving players 'what for' and vice versa... This isn't about fans being 'precious' or players not being able to show emotions...

It has nothing to do with his football ability (or lack of it) but more to do with his personal affiliations.

He alienated himself from the fans on Remembrance Sunday with his showing of contempt for the servicemen who gave their lives in defence of this country. He may be right, he may be wrong. It`s not for me to judge.

I would say though, whatever his beliefs, he was wrong to bring religious/political views on to the football field. That is where the rift began.

 

I agree, some of the **** that comes off the terraces is shocking, that's it's own thing, I'm sure there's a thread on it. But that doesn't really transfer into the living room. Living rooms all over the planet watched by millions. Like I said, spotlight.
