Kirk Broadfoot: Rotherham United defender banned for 10 games
Rotherham United's Kirk Broadfoot has been banned for 10 matches by the Football Association after he was found guilty of misconduct.

Reports suggest the 30-year-old former Rangers defender received the ban for sectarian abuse of winger James McClean in the game between the Millers and Wigan in March.

McClean, 26, is a Catholic while Broadfoot is a Protestant.

Rotherham are not planning to comment on the suspension.

It is reported that Broadfoot was unhappy with the award of a free-kick against him for a foul on the Republic of Ireland international from which Wigan scored, and afterwards accused McClean of diving.

The FA said in a statement: "The charge was that during a league fixture between Rotherham and Wigan Athletic on 14 March 2015 Broadfoot used abusive and/or insulting words towards a member of the opposition, in breach of FA Rule E3(1).

"It was further alleged that the breach was an 'aggravated breach' as defined by Rule E3(2).

"Broadfoot was also fined £7,500 and ordered to complete an education programme."

Rule E(2) involves a reference to "ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion or belief, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability".

It is the longest ban to have been handed out by the governing body for verbal abuse.

Then-Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches in 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra.

Longest bans handed out by Football Association
    9 months:
Manchester United's Eric Cantona for his 'kung-fu' style kick in 1995

9 months: Chelsea keeper Mark Bosnich who tested positive for cocaine in 2003

8 months: Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United for missing a drugs test in 2003

12 games: Joey Barton of QPR for two counts of violent conduct against Manchester City in 2012

11 games: Sheffield Wednesday's Paolo di Canio for pushing over referee Paul Alcock in 1998

10 games: Former Southampton player David Prutton for shoving referee Alan Wiley in 2005

10 games: Rotherham defender Kirk Broadfoot for abusive/insulting words against Wigan in 2015

9 games: Paul Davis of Arsenal for punching Southampton's Glenn Cockerill in 1988

8 games: Liverpool's Luis Suarez for racially abusing Patrice Evra in 2011

5 weeks: Man United's Roy Keane for comments made in his autobiography in 2003

Crazy, he'd have been better off to have punched him, that earns just a 9 match ban !

It's ok for players to commit serious fouls that the ref doesn't deal with and can't be retrospectively dealt with yet verbal abuse carries much harsher 'sentences' even if the ref hasn't heard what was said. Football really is becoming a joke with it's priorities...

I don't honestly have a problem with it. It's as bad as racism and if he'd called a black player a name it would have been a similar ban I'd have thought.

What's your problem with it? From the accounts I've read, this was not a heat of the moment outburst but rather a religious bigot indulging in abuse of someone who happens to be a Catholic. I know. Let's treat him with kid gloves and send out the subliminal message that it's ok to pick on someone because of their race, religion or sexual orientation. Fully deserved imo. The FA clearly wanted to make an example of him and the fact that they've arguably been soft in other cases does not mean they should not be applauded for getting it right on this occasion

If the Sunderland players showed half as much passion playing the game as getting upset with McClean they might stay up.

'Player celebrates win in front of fans giving him 90 minutes of abuse' shocker.

"He isn’t the sharpest tool in the box, that’s not being disrespectful to him"

Best comment I've heard this season!

In fairness Watford you seem to have a very balanced view of this.

I'm not in any way condoning anything that he has done but I will add that unless you have lived in Northern Ireland or spoken to reasonably minded people who live in the north but see themselves as Irish and not British, then you can't even begin to understand his viewpoint.

The simple essence of this is that he like so many other people living in the North see themselves as irish. His family have been directly affected by the troubles. Many people I know and work with fall into this category. The vast majority have accepted the peace process as a stepping stone to eventually getting the six counties back. Indescrible atrocities happened during this period to all sides. He has a right IMO to not recognise British rule in the North but as eluded to above, he should then not be plying his trade in England.

    Good for him
a free mind means exactly that
He faces being slagged off by people who think they need respect for the mainstream things they believe in
    Hope he doesn't care
Because the very people who have never questioned how and why they have to comply ... Don't really care about the person next to them at all
It takes a sporting event or a war to bring the mainstream together what does that tell you and in an environment where everyone wants to own well almost everything it's only going to get worse
The single man or woman in the UK is programmed to do best for themselves in the main
So what's the difference with this brave bloke who believes in something far nearer the truth
The pack of the brainwashed are bound to get cross ... Why do you think he did it ? Hope he upset as many as possible IMO

If the UK believes it what it preaches
    Then what's the problem ?
You want to be national then stop buying imports for a start
You want your cake and eat it plus most want their neighbours cake as well then to top it all you get to be self righteous about everything
England as a closed island or club would last five minutes

Hopefully in the end The British will realise that we are and have always been the problem … doing what we have done around the world with such an self righteous bastard attitude. The chickens have come home to roost … it's a new chapter in our history to deal with and I don't believe we will handle it well at all. If al a football crowd can do is chant then wow that's going to do **** all IMO. Wait until you need to get Englishmen organised? .. We can talk a good talk no doubt
Try getting the south motivated in the UK they are too busy buying building their own individual castles. No wonder the rest of the world looks at us with anger
    I understand it 100%
