Steve Round turns down chance to be Steve McClaren's assistant at Newcastle because he wants to become a manager
    • Steve McClaren and Steve Round worked together at Derby last season
    • The pair first worked together at Middlesbrough, then again for England
    • McClaren was appointed Newcastle United manager earlier this month
    • He approached Round with a view to being his assistant at Newcastle but the coach said he is looking to become a manager or head coach next

Steve McClaren will not be joined by his former assistant Steve Round at Newcastle after the coach said he wants to pursue a career in management.

Round first worked with the newly-appointed Newcastle manager at Middlesbrough, before joining him as England No 2 between 2006 and 2007.

They linked up again when McClaren was at Derby last season, with Round becoming a part-time coach, but he has rejected the opportunity to renew their acquaintance at Newcastle.

They have previously worked together while McClaren was manager at Middlesbrough and England

'We spoke a couple of days ago, and he asked if I'd be interested,' he told Sky Sports News HQ.

'But he also knows it's not what I want to do next. I want to be a head coach or a manager.

Round has been assistant manager at Newcastle before - he was Sam Allardyce's assistant at Newcastle - and he worked under David Moyes at Everton and Manchester United.

However, he suggested that he could be open to joining McClaren in the future if he does not get a job as a manager in the coming months.

Round says he wants to become a manager or a head coach rather than be an assistant again

'That's no disrespect to Newcastle. I worked there for a year with Big Sam and Kevin Keegan, and it's a magnificent club with great supporters, but at the moment I don't think I'll be joining them,' he added.

'To be a head coach or manager is my No 1 target. If that doesn't happen in the coming months I'll have to drop back to being a No 2 or coach, and I've got no problems with that.'

what a load of bollocks, if he signs Nolan and he comes up trumps I would imagine 99% of Sunderland fans would appreciate him, not love him, not be their fav player etc. but appreciate what he does for the team.

Anybody who watched Nolan last season should be forming their opinion of him on his game, nothing to do with history, the guy is a snail with an appetite for red-mist descending and that's nothing but a liability, he's got nothing left to offer as a player at this level, if Sam signs him that's a clear sign of what he thinks of your current players.

Id find it very difficult to support nolan at safc. Cant forget his past easily and i agree with Terry, he offers very little now.

Feel similarly about Big Sam tbh! Think he could do really well and turn my thoughts around but i will never like him. I will start to lose passion for the club if he is here long i think.

Kevin Philips? He's did a grand Job at Leicester and an assistant's role in this league would represent natural progression in his coaching career.
